Sen. John McCain dead at 81

Its sad to hear this though.

Washington (CNN)Sen. John McCain, who was diagnosed with brain cancer last year, has made the decision to discontinue medical treatment, his family said in a statement on Friday.

Although McCain's colleagues had braced for the worst following his cancer prognosis a year ago, Friday's announcement left them shaken. It effectively closes a tumultuous Washington career that included two unsuccessful presidential runs and saw McCain emerge as a singular political figure, an icon of the Senate and latterly as a vehement critic of President Donald Trump.
"Last summer, Senator John McCain shared with Americans the news our family already knew: he had been diagnosed with an aggressive glioblastoma, and the prognosis was serious. In the year since, John has surpassed expectations for his survival. But the progress of disease and the inexorable advance of age render their verdict. With his usual strength of will, he has now chosen to discontinue medical treatment," the family of the Arizona Republican said in a statement.

The statement from McCain's family went on to say, "Our family is immensely grateful for the support and kindness of all his caregivers over the last year, and for the continuing outpouring of concern and affection from John's many friends and associates, and the many thousands of people who are keeping him in their prayers. God bless and thank you all."
Cindy McCain, the senator's wife, wrote in a tweet, "I love my husband with all of my heart. God bless everyone who has cared for my husband along this journey." The senator's daughter, Meghan McCain, said in a tweet, "My family is deeply appreciative of all the love and generosity you have shown us during this past year. Thank you for all your continued support and prayers. We could not have made it this far without you - you've given us strength to carry on."

Republicans and Democrats alike tweeted support for McCain and his family Friday, a reflection of just how far McCain's influence reached.

Now Roberta McCain has released a statement through a family friend on John.

. Sen. John McCain‘s mother Roberta is aware that her son is stopping treatment for stage-four brain cancer, PEOPLE has learned.

“Roberta is 106, but she’s spunky,” a close family friend exclusively tells PEOPLE. “She knows he is ill.”

On Friday, the McCain family announced that the 81-year-old politician — who was diagnosed with glioblastoma, an aggressive brain cancer with a median survival rate of just 15 months, in July 2017 — made the decision to stop treatment.

“Last summer, Senator John McCain shared with Americans the news our family already knew: he had been diagnosed with an aggressive glioblastoma, and the prognosis was serious,” the statement said. “In the year since, John has surpassed expectations for his survival. But the progress of disease and the inexorable advance of age render their verdict. With his usual strength of will, he has now chosen to discontinue medical treatment.”

“Our family is immensely grateful for the support and kindness of all his caregivers over the last year, and for the continuing outpouring of concern and affection from John’s many friends and associated, and the many thousands of people who are keeping him in their prayers,” the statement continued. “God bless and thank you all.”

this is heartbreaking for his family to know he's in the final stages of a terminal battle with Brain Cancer. now his death is no longer a matter of if, but now a matter of when. i bet he is in the process of being moved to Hospice care and pretty much ready to go into the congressional office in heaven.

I didn't agree with a lot of his views, so I voted reluctantly for Obama in 2008, but I respected him.

Actually, if not for his choosing Palin I might very well have voted for him.

Update John McCain has just died

John McCain, a decorated Vietnam War hero and veteran Senator from Arizona, has died after battling brain cancer.

McCain was born on August 29, 1936 at a Naval Air Station in the Panama Canal Zone. His father, John S. McCain Jr. was a U.S. Navy admiral. His father was also in the Navy.

Following in his father’s and grandfather’s footsteps, McCain entered the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis and graduated in 1958.

He eventually trained as naval aviator and participated in the Vietnam War.

In 1965, McCain married Carol Shepp, and adopted her two young children Douglas and Andrew. He and Carol later had a daughter named Sidney.

In 1967, McCain was flying a bombing mission over North Vietnam when his plane was shot down by a missile over Hanoi. He survived by ejecting from the plane but suffered broken bones.

Some North Vietnamese captured him, and he would begin his time as a prisoner of war. McCain would suffer years of torture until his release in 1973.

His wartime injuries left him permanently incapable of raising his arms above his head.

After the war, McCain served as the Navy’s liaison to the U. S. Senate in 1977. He said that moment was the beginning of his second career as a public servant.

In 1979, McCain met Cindy Hensley, a teacher from Phoenix. In 1980, McCain and Carol divorced and later that year, McCain and Hensley married.

In 1981, McCain retired from the Navy as a captain and was awarded military awards and decorations including, Silver Star Medal, two Legions of
Merit, Distinguished Flying Cross, three Bronze Star Medals, two Purple Heart Medals, two Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medals, and Prisoner of War Medal.

In 1982, McCain ran as a Republican for an open seat in Arizona's 1st congressional district, which was being vacated by 30-year incumbent.
McCain won the race and later joined the House Committee on Interior Affairs.

In 1987, McCain was elected to the Senate, succeeding longtime American conservative icon and Arizona fixture Barry Goldwater.

McCain soon gained national visibility. He delivered a well-received speech at the 1988 Republican National Convention, was mentioned by the press as a short list vice-presidential running mate for Republican nominee George H. W. Bush.

In the 1990s, McCain developed a reputation for independence. He said he took pride in challenging party leadership and establishment forces.

The term “maverick Republican” became a label frequently applied to McCain.

In 1997, McCain became chairman of the powerful Senate Commerce Committee.

McCain announced his first candidacy for the 2000 presidential race. He eventually lost the nomination to George W. Bush and later endorsed him.

In 2007, McCain announced his candidacy for president and later chose Sarah Palin as his running mate.

President Donald Trump tweeted his condolences to the family of Sen. John McCain, who died Saturday at age 81.
"My deepest sympathies and respect go out to the family of Senator John McCain. Our hearts and prayers are with you!" the president tweeted.
Trump has frequently criticized McCain since he first launched his presidential campaign in 2015, and kept up the abuse even as McCain fought brain cancer.

The Maverick - an Arizona icon and national Statesman. Thanks for your service Senator, and a big tip of the fez!

The one big weird thing to my mind is just yesterday the family announced he was discontinuing his medical treatments and before the ink was dry on that story he's gone. Some things were obviously omitted in that earlier story.

Probably nothing omitted. More likely that treatment was doing no good, he was near the end with or without treatment, and he decided enough was enough. But what was released was what he and his family wanted released.

The local and network news and talk shows are full of legacy discussions this morning regarding John McCain. I really doubt McCain himself would be comfortable with all of the adulation. He seemed to recognize his shortcomings and mistakes and preferred to move past them rather than beat a dead horse. Although I am a lifelong resident of Arizona I did not vote for him. Looking back though perhaps this country would be in far better shape had he won the presidency instead of Bush. (I didn't vote for Bush either.)

At any rate, no matter what anyone thinks of his politics, no one can criticize his character. Those are going to be some giant shoes to fill. The bar has been set very high.

Senator McCain's final resting plans as detailed below by Time. CNN has reported McCain had requested Donald Trump not attend his burial.

Details about John McCain’s funeral services have been announced after the longtime Arizona senator died on Saturday. McCain, who died roughly a year after being diagnosed with an aggressive form of brain cancer, was 81.

McCain will lie in state in both the Arizona Capitol and the U.S. Capitol Rotunda on Wednesday and Friday, respectively, before his burial at a private service in Annapolis on Sunday, his office said on Sunday.

Here’s what we know so far about McCain’s memorial services and funeral, as tributes to the lawmaker and war hero continue to pour in.

Services will be held in Washington and Arizona
McCain will be memorialized at ceremonies Arizona and Washington, D.C. this week. The late senator will first lie in state at the Arizona State Capitol, where a private ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. PST on Wednesday, which would have been McCain’s 82nd birthday. Members of the public will be invited to pay their respects at the State Capitol from 1 p.m. through 8 p.m. PST on Wednesday. On Thursday, a memorial service will be held at the National Phoenix Baptist Church at 10 a.m. PST.

In Washington, D.C., McCain will lie in state at the United States Capitol on Friday, where a ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. EST and members of the public will be allowed to pay their respects from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m EST. McCain will become the 13th senator to lie in state in the Capitol Rotunda, an honor reserved for the nation’s “most eminent citizens,” according to the Architect of the Capitol. The nation mourns the loss of a great American patriot, a statesman who put his country first and enriched this institution through many years of service. The Senate is keeping Cindy, the McCain family, all John’s friends and staff, and the people of Arizona in our prayers at this tremendously difficult time,” Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said in a statement confirming the senator would lie in state at the U.S. Capitol. “I appreciate my colleagues and the entire Senate and House family’s assistance with this honor.”

A memorial service in Washington, D.C. will be held at the Washington National Cathedral on Saturday, Sept. 1 at 10 a.m. EST.

McCain’s office said a livestream will be available for the services at the National Phoenix Baptist Church and the National Cathedral.

Two former presidents are expected to eulogize McCain
Former Presidents Barack Obama and George W. Bush are expected to speak at McCain’s service at the National Cathedral, according to AP, though the eulogies have not been officially announced.

“These were bitter contests, both of them,” Sen. Jeff Flake, R-Ariz., told the AP. “To ask them to speak at your funeral, and for them to be honored at the opportunity, that tells you all you need to know.”

Both men have already released statements honoring the longtime Arizona senator, with Bush calling him “a man of deep conviction and a patriot of the highest order.” Obama, in his statement, recognized McCain’s commitment to his country, writing that, “…we shared, for all our differences, a fidelity to something higher – the ideals for which generations of Americans and immigrants alike have fought, marched, and sacrificed.”

Despite those heartfelt sentiments, McCain reportedly wanted to keep his funeral simple, telling “60 Minutes” last year that the ceremony should include “a couple of people that stand up and say, ‘This guy, he served his country,'” CBS reports. And last year, during an appearance on The View, McCain said he’d like to be remembered as someone who “served his country” and was “proud of his family and his daughter.”

McCain will be buried in the U.S. Naval Academy Cemetery
McCain will be laid to rest in a private ceremony at the U.S. Naval Academy Cemetery in Annapolis, Md., according to McCain’s office. His grave site will overlook the Severn River, and will be next to that of his old friend, Adm. Chuck Larson.

Perhaps "omitted" was the wrong word. What I was eluding to was that in cases of a public figure reaching the end of life it seems a few days before their death a story appears that the individual has some hint they are not doing well. I believe in Aretha's case I saw an article that said she had been admitted to hospice care then two days later she was gone. In McCain's case it was the next day after the announcement he was stopping treatment. In both cases there was no clue that death was eminent. In my mind these hints seem to be orchestrated to give the go-ahead to the nation's media to prepare the articles which will be published when word of the person's demise are announced. There have been many other examples of this same treatment over the past few decades.

I am not criticizing either person's family or representatives but it seems to me our national media has established a protocol that was never warranted.
