Lisa Van Cise out at KING5

Apparently she's not next in line to replace Renner or Marriott, should either retire or be determined by TEGNA to be too expensive / too old.

Any thoughts?

I thought Lisa did a solid job. I don't know if she had grown into Renner material. But I could definitely have seen her taking over for Marriott in the mornings.

Not sure what to make of all this. Argier is out at KIRO (his choice), and other than Poole, and Renner, there are no really strong weather anchors in the market. Yes, Marriott has been around for years, but I think most Seattle stations are looking to hire some superstars in this department.

Palmer has surprised me at KIRO. He came in as a left fielder, but he really is good. Good move, KIRO. (Just map out Harry Wapplor's career and you will be fine! :))

Lisa had a (non-TV) job lined up right away after her last day, so perhaps her contract was not renewed (but she was allowed to work it out). Pretty sad to see her go, because she was better than others below her in the pecking order at KING (Mary Lee and Keisha Burns).

Very surprised to see Sam Argier leave KIRO. He rocketed to the Chief spot at that station, displacing first Rick Van Cise on the morning show and then Rebecca Stevenson as Chief. While I liked him better than Rebecca, his high energy weathercasts were a little hard to take day-in day-out.

Morgan Palmer is one who has shown great improvement during his time in the market. Remember, he was passed over by Bob Jordan as the AM Met when Sam moved to the chief spot. Brian Monahan was brought in and was very good, but Palmer has really stepped it up and has good chemistry with all the anchors on KIRO. In the 13 years since Harry Wappler left, he becomes the 4th Chief Met (following Andy, Rebecca and Sam).

Regarding strong, up and coming weather talent, there seems to be little in the market. KING's Jim Guy has a ton of experience, but I just don't like his presentation. He's a bit herky-jerky in delivery, and I don't think has the chops to be a lead met. Shannon O'Donnell on KOMO is very good, and could slip into Steve Pool's slot some day. Meanwhile, Seth Wayne on mornings on KOMO continues to be very, very weak. Happy to see Nick Allard return from Portland to be KIRO's morning met... Kelly Franson on weekends on KIRO is also a little weak.

We have a couple of very strong, capable mets on the beach in this market.... Meeghan Black and Todd Johnson are both doing production and consulting. Scott Haveson is still kicking around (and occasionally makes an appearance as a freelancer) and as we know Rick Van Cise is still at KOMO. Any of them are an improvement over many of the current on-air talent in Seattle.

Just happen to flip through the channels this morning and up popped Lisa on KOMO doing the local weather during Saturday Good Morning America. Looks like from her twitter account she's popping up mornings from time to time.

Yes, she's been pinch-hitting for Zahn on KOMO weekend mornings from time to time since last year, and recently Parella Lewis as well albeit on weekend evenings for O'Donnell with fellow Q13/KOMO personality Mayovsky.

I figured we'd see her a little more as they cover shifts for Steve Pool while he's on medical leave.

We may not have realized how good both Parella Lewis and Lisa Van Cise were, until their respective stations non-renewed them and their replacements aren't nearly as good.

Todd Johnson is a great talent, and a really great guy in person too. Also, don't forget Andy Wappler.

It is remarkable, that a decade after Todd left a full time weather job, he can slip into a slot on KIRO as a fill in, and present as if it was something he's doing every day. A true talent.

The 2000s - a decade of swings and misses for KOMO regarding their talent line-up, their biggest mistake may have been shoving Todd out in favor of a dude who never lasted longer than 3 years at any station.

Excellent point! Todd Johnson is one of those rare people who is really good on television and always feels "comfortable" to the viewers.

Watch Todd in this KIRO News at Noon from January of this year: https://www.kiro7.com/video?videoId=689445622&videoVersion=1.0
The forecast starts at 18:45.

Other than a quick stumble at the very start of the forecast, Todd moves through his presentation smoothly, never pausing to think. He knows exactly what he wants to say for each slide, and knows what's coming up next and gets right to it.

Then watch this Jordan Steele trainwreck from tonight: https://youtu.be/lRQLj3AE2Xw

Lori can't even make small talk with him trying to set-up the forecast. At 1:24, he puts up a graph of high temps, and there is a blank space on the left side where he's supposed to stand, and point at the graphs. Instead, he stands on the right, either blocking the graphs or crowding off to the edge of the camera. Meanwhile, the shot look terrible, because of that big, blank white space. And then there is the whole thing with the Towercam shot at 1:50.

You tell me which forecast you'd rather watch.

And I want to know ... what audience does the KING5 news director think they are targeting with Jordan Steele's bro-tastic forecast? It's a train-wreck.

I think that's the point. From what I can tell, as a daily viewer of KING 5 news for the last 30 years, and as an over 55 yo, I am not even close to the audience that KING is going for anymore. They are incorporating those non-newsy Take 5 hosts, and their social media hypes into the newscasts. You can see how Mark & Lori are being coached to be more personable. Mark talks about his wife and kids, Lori talks about her golf game. If you are looking for a more traditional newscast, its time to look over at KIRO, or even Q13. Plus the mistakes in graphics and in the way the news is written on KING adds to the frustration of my viewing experience. I think the way Jordan does the weather, like watching a video game, is the point. Its like the new reporters they have hired lately at KING. They call them Multi Media Journalists. They do their own camera work, sometimes on their Iphones. Traditional news is on its way out the door.

Here's a little 'inside baseball' from your ol' pal Kelly: In larger markets like Seattle, stations do A LOT of independent audience research. As in, volumes and volumes of data is collected. This includes focus groups who give input about talent. Clearly, if talent is swapped out there is a research-related reason. I've attended many of those same focus groups, and you would be amazed and the similar comments coming from wildly different groups of people before a determination whether talent is considered worth keeping around. As WX people go, there is a reason Steve Poole has been around since Christ was a corporal. It's because Steve, in name recognition alone, tests very high in research.

Camera work on iPhones? I see a lot of that crap here in Yakima/Tri-Cities! When there's a breaking news story or live report on NBC Right Now, about half of the time they are using an iPhone with horrible shaky pictures and sometimes blurry pictures (like an internet stream buffering). The other half consist of a reporter bringing a camera and moving the camera herself. Whatever happened to 'camera operators'? It seems like all the stations here, KIMA/KNDO/KAPP, devote some of their newscast to whatever's trending on social media, like they have a lot of 20 and 30-something people watching the 6:00 news, along with segments that I'd rather see on Today. Sinclair feeds these 'Lifestyle Matters' segments to all their stations. A woman talking for 45 seconds about a new trend in fashion, or a health benefit for a new food.
