More FM's Christmas music survey

The survey is up. It's usually a bit more prominent (and usually goes up a couple weeks earlier) but now it's just another slide in the website's carousel. Be sure to waste an hour giving advice that won't be utilized. Haha. It is a fun little diversion if you enjoy Christmas music.

Whichever. I'd bet--if I hadn't blown my money on a lowing Mega Millions ticket--that none of the posters here actually fit the primary demo. Myself very much included.

But taken just a tad more seriously, you can get polar opposite reactions from surveys of any sort. Start the music in June, start the music on Christmas Eve. Don't start the music at all. Play the barking dogs. Don't play the barking dogs. I want nothing but songs by people dead at least 20 years. I want nothing that hasn't been recorded by an American Idol contestant in the last five years. Christmas Shoes is sweet and sentimental. If I hear Christmas Shoes, I will never listen to you again.

I'm not saying they're relying solely on the survey, because of course, they can't, but it's one item in the toolbox they can use to take an anecdotal snapshot--albeit taken with a grain of salt.

I mean, I have consistently said not to do *all* Christmas until Christmas Eve. That means they don't listen to me. But I also give songs like Where Are You Christmas and Christmas Eve Sarajevo high marks, and they play those fairly consistently. Perhaps they listen to me half the time.

Which is still better than anyone in my house actually listens to me.

Love that last line!

I've always felt the survey is just a gimmick. And a good one at that. I think what they might pay attention to is how many people actually utilize the survey, as a way to gauge audience excitement. But I sincerely doubt they're looking at the songs ratings when they have so much other data available.

I love Christmas music so I take the survey every year just to kill time. But I think they've updated the list of songs in the survey maybe once over all these years. Year in and year out, there are a few really odd titles in there that they'd never play regardless of how many stars they get. This year, their site is super glitchy making it take way longer than it should to get through the survey (which takes a long time anyway).

Also, I don't know how much they even care about the Christmas library. I mean, obviously they can't make it annoying but they're the Christmas station so pretty much regardless, people are gonna tune in. Especially since no one else in town is doing it. Their competition is pretty much people who don't like Christmas music. haha.

Oh dear, it’ll take longer this year? Yikes. There have been years I’ve given up as it is, with the sheer number of songs.

There’s only so many versions of Jingle Bell Rock I can take, even in 10-second bites, before I want to jab something pointy into my ears.

It kept buffering and then the whole page would time out. Gimmicks work best when they don't frustrate the listeners. haha.
