The guy who is running it was actually hired to tear down the old, abandoned site, but didn't have the heart to do it. He has a long-term lease on the property now, has cleaned out the old building, and is setting things up for monitoring and ham-radio field day types of activities, possibly doing more. This is just a start.
The local power company is planning to re-work their lines all around the area, replacing dozens of bad insulators, hoping to make it a very RFI-quiet zone.

The Addison, Illinois receiver is almost useless now when it comes to AM. WSCR is the only Chicago 50K - the only one! - that is listenable or even comes in at all. No WGN and WBBM, and definitely no WLS or WMVP.
A receiver has popped up from across Lake Michigan in Lakeside, Michigan, that has very good reception of all the Chicago 50Ks except WMVP. WTMJ is solid, but the bad ground conductivity of southwest Michigan definitely hurts some signals you think you might hear there (such as WJR).

I spent a week last month at a vacation house in New Buffalo, Michigan. About ten miles southwest of Lakeside. And two blocks from Lake Michigan. I posted about it.

No WMVP? It was solid where I was on both the SuperadioII and even on the SRF-37 Walkman. As also were WIND and WYLL. But as you mentioned, the ground conductivity in Southwest Michigan is bad. Basically all sand dunes with a very thin layer of topsoil So the conductivity is about as bad as it gets. Result: not only is WJR missing, 5kw WKZO, about 60 miles to the east was very weak...something I never would have thought.

Just checked that receiver and it's there but with a lot of static, much more than the other 50Ks. I was surprised as well. None of them have perfect reception from that receiver, but 670 comes the closest.
That's about as far east as I've begun to hear cancellation on 1000 during drives between Chicago and Ohio, but daytime it's usually very good as you said.
The Addison receiver is the one that really shocks me. That has to be a terrible receiver not to get the flamethrowers from that location.

I wonder how far the Lakeside receiver is from the actual lake? Where I was, as I said, the big Chicago signals all sounded like Locals, but I was only two blocks from the shore. If the Lakeside receiver was a few miles inland, that could've made a difference. Still seems, odd, however.

And you're right about the Addison receiver. I gave it a try a few months ago, and thought it was absolutely useless on AM. Did you hear WMBI? That's the 4.2kw daytimer religious station on 1110 (in Spanish...and formerly 5kw). Their stick is in a Addison, and does a reasonably good job of covering the Chicago metro area.

Just checked and 1110 is there. So are 1160 and 1690, the latter a bit stronger than the former. 780 *barely* comes in.
A month ago or so, 720 and 1000 were at least listenable, albeit with a lot of static.
Your guess is as good as mine, probably better, as to where the Lakeside receiver is actually located. The map shows it as being a little bit in from the lake, but other times that peg has shown up closer to Michigan City.

The Kaneohe, Hi receiver is getting some good DX towards the mainland this morning. Of course all the West Coast stations were there, but I heard WBBM in back of KKOH around 12:10AM CST.

Heard lots of mainland and Canadian DX last night on the Hawaii receiver. Both WLS & WBBM were heard. Also heard WBBM on one of the U.K. receivers. I wonder if WBBM is on the WSCR tower yet?

I was wondering that myself the other day, but I haven't heard. I wouldn't expect to be able to notice anything new or different at my location if it is.

Agreed, I don't think locally we'd notice any change. Their skywave signal is still excellent as I have noticed this listening to the distant SDR's. Maybe CADXER knows as I think he lives near the WSCR tower.

You'd probably have to be, what, 90-100 miles out to notice a substantial change? Unfortunately no SDRs are located roughly that far from Chicago to be able to tell. Even the one that was on temporarily in southwest Michigan might be indicative of any difference in WBBM's signal.

Yes I live near the WSCR tower. Actually I live close to the WBBM tower as well. I have not noticed anything different during recently tuning around. I doubt that the move has happened yet, since checking out the FCC web site does not show a licence to cover yet. The proposed move is still listed as a CP (Construction Permit) only. It's possible that they might be testing the new set up though.

Thanks for letting us know.

As we are now in MWDX season I briefly checked out the arctic and Hawaii SDRs. On the Arctic got a good signal from KBRW Barrow, Ak. On the Hawaii receiver heard on 780 KKOH and KNOM fighting it out. The Alaskans were doing well tonight in the Pacific and Arctic.

I had KBRW with a good signal on the Arctic SDR about ten days ago. Along with a bunch of stuff from the Middle East (and, of course, Europe). But nothing readily identifiable from North America. I definitely was/am expecting that would change very soon, so I'll have to go to the SDR sooner rather than later and check things out.

Tried the Arctic and Hawaii receivers tonight. On the Arctic several Seattle stations were strong especially KOMO. Heard 780 in Nome, Ak on both receivers. On the Hawaiian heard KKOH and KNOM. KSL was the farthest east I heard on the Hawaiian along with WBAP.
