Doug McIntyre Leaves KABC

Will he be turning off the lights and the transmitter when he leaves?

The ratings would indicate that they have already done that... 0.2 in 25-54.

Well, that's the pits. Been listening to Doug since before Red Eye Radio, when he would sub for KABC hosts. A wonderfully well informed, balanced guy. His departure is another nail in the coffin of a once great station.

Sad. He and peter the only reason to listen. Jillian barberie is a disaster she has no business on talk radio. She should never have been hired. Dr drew is boring. Terrible show. Cumulus would u do everyone a favor and pull the plug on the embarrassment of talk radio 790 kabc. The current kabc wont be missed. The old kabc is missed all the time. Get rid of this trash

Agreed with all you've said, though I would miss Peter Tilden. He and Doug are the only sources on L.A. radio who deal with local issues.

790 KABC has been a coffin doornail since or even before Paul Harvey passed.
If only PPMs were attached to pacemakers, they might be able to break a 0.5 share but even that is far fetched and fleeting

That said, 22 years at a station synonymous with drain circling is a pretty good run.
Too bad no one really listened in a group advertisers cared about.

Doug deserved and had better but these were the cards he was dealt.

Losing doug is a huge nail in the coffin of the embarrassment of talk radio 790 kabc. They cant b that dumb at cumulus to keep this station going. Losing douglas is a huge blow n now they will lose what listeners they had left. I like randy he should never have left kfi and leeanne but there not the reasons people will stick around. Put a fork in it the partys over. Namin a new host is just delaying the inevitable. Cumulus has 2 know that.

KABC's problem is mostly signal. No matter what they put on, most of the usable coverage is in highly ethnic areas where that kind of talk radio has few users.

The signal has not been competitive since the decade of the 80's when noise levels on AM began rapidly increasing due to new technology and the population in the dwindling coverage area changed to their disadvantage.

In any case, in the last 10 months KABC has been between a 0.2 and 0.4 in mornings in 25-54, ranking it between 37th and 46th in the market.

Of course your definition of usable signal is related to at home and at work listening. But,hasn't the use of radio at home and at work decreased in recent years? I keep hearing that the overwhelming majority of the population is still "exposed" (over 90 percent) to radio, yet standalone radio sales are at an all time low and I cannot find anyone in my workplace who has a radio on at their desk in an office of hundreds. No, we don't have a rule against radios. Secondly, I'm hearing that AM/FM radio listening accounts for only about 47 percent of all radio listening and is even lower among younger demos.

I always thought KABC was one of those 50KW stations.....Says they are now 6,600 watts? Was this always the way?

Thats why cumulus would be best off to LMA 790 kabc. They would make more revenue. You certainly cant tell me 790 is a cash cow for cumulus. At least they have done some good things with there sister station klos like hire steve jones. Even kabc main problem is signsl they can never get the numbers they once had so y not LMA it to someone. I will tell u now losing doug n the mornin is a big blow. Cumulus has to know that.

6,600 is an upgrade. They were 5,000 watts back in the day. But until the 80s, as David notes, 5,000 watts at 790 was enough to cover the L.A. metro---especially the areas in which KABC's mature, upscale audience at the time lived.

As mentioned, KABC got about $100 million for the land the AM directional system was on. The value of the station is likely less than the sale price of KHJ recently, likely in the realm of $7 million or so.

When the land was sold, the transmitter site had to move. They diplexed with KWKW, and were able to increase power a bit, from 5 kw to 6.6, to compensate for the shorter KWKW towers which are less efficient. For all practical purposes, the station lost a tiny bit in the daytime, and a bit more at night.

Yes. It has always been on a regional channel, which until most of the last two decades, were capped at 5 kw day and night.

I miss Doug overnight.

The Red Eye guys are a tough listen. Gary can't sight-read to save his life. When he reads a news article at length (which is often) he starts a sentence, realizes that he misunderstood the context, backs up and tries again. He tries to compose himself by laughing and pounding the table for 5-10 seconds. Eric is less frenetic but has a halting speech patter that's hard to take. Gary goes crazy if he thinks a caller might want to present a slightly different angle, cutting him/her off by yelling, "No-no-No-NO-NO!" after the caller gets out about three words.

It's really a bad show but unfortunately there's nothing else live overnight other than paranormal nonsense. I wish Doug could somehow come back to that slot.

Terrible show! Kinda ruins nighttime DXing. I can probably pull in RedEye from seven different stations, and KABC squashes my local 790 at night so it's unavoidable.
