96.9 in CHS goes classic hits

96.9 in Charleston (WIWF) which has been country for the past 11 years, and went Christmas in November, has now switched to a classic hits format as 96.9 the Wolf. It is mostly 70s-90s classic rock music.

Awful. Why use the old name when the station first went country as 96.9 The Wolf. Would been smart to go Sunny 96.9 which was used before but sounds better.

If it sounds like WOMG, which from my limited sampling it does, it’s a fairly standard classic hits station for Cumulus. A lot of material that would be considered too old/soft for many classic rockers and a more laid back presentation. Boring, but an alternative to 101.7 and better than a 3rd country station.

I get that, but for this format, "Wolf" works. Cox uses the "eagle" branding for a similar product, and the other day in Tampa, FL, Beasley launched "the shark" with a similar format.

I do hope this 70's-90's rock is aggressive, like the recent flip in Tampa. 104.5 is a snoozer and doesn't play enough 90's.

Listened for several more hours today off and on. Carbon copy of WOMG down to even the imaging. I didn’t hear any 90s or even late 80s. There isn’t really much disco/R&B/pure pop stuff, but mostly 70s and 80s, and heavier on 70s than a lot of big market classic hits stations. Billy Joel, America, Elton John, 38 Special, Men at Work, Eagles, Van Halen, Supertramp, Paul McCartney/Wings, Mellencamp, Guess Who, Foreigner, Tears for Fears, Orleans, Steve Winwood, Fleetwood Mac, Journey, Modern English, Rod Stewart, etc. As I said, very typical classic hits station for Cumulus. It’s definitely not classic rock or even like the Cox classic hits stations that are heavy on 80s rock. It fills a void, but if you’re wanting anything remotely even as hard as 104.5, keep changing stations. The songs are rock based, more than a typical classic hits station, but mostly sleepy or non offensive. Edgier Rock that would even be heard on a classic rock station or Chuck FM is avoided.

They’re even using the same voiceovers and “where every song is a classic” stuff that ‘OMG uses. That PR doesn’t describe this station at all. It’s female friendly, core is around mid 70s to mid 80s pop rock. If you think 104 is a snoozer, this will put you in a coma.

IMO, an approach like sister station Sunny 103.1 in Myrtle Beach (typical 70s/80s pop/pop rock classic hits) might have been better to go after WXLY’s older end as well. Still, better than a third country station.

Don't remember enough about the 90s but I believe the station I was hearing on 104.5 in Myrtle Beach must have been WRFQ. I stayed on the south end and my room was on the south end of the place I stayed, almost. Quite soft for a "rock" station. I guess I'll hear the new Wolf next time, or I could even try streaming it.

Sunny in Myrtle Beach isn't my style but it seems pretty good.

John Boy & Billy are now on in the AMs at 96.9. This is the first time they’ve been on Charleston radio since they were on the old Cat Country 107.5.
