Boston Radio Ratings December 2018

Well you're a bit beyond the target, but the question is: So what do you do? Stop listening? Switch to WBUR? Continue to listen?

‘BUR? Don’t think so; their liberal bias comes through rather strongly.

Stop/continue listening? Why? I think I fit the demo for a good many of ‘BZ’s listeners.

For the record: lay down and die is not an option.

is due to death?
I don't listen to tel-talk anymore with an occasional overnight exception. But in the old days it wasn't unusual to hear of a regular callers death. In any case I hope no vital caller passed in 2018 that help make 68 what it is today and caused ratings to take a unexpected dive.

Howie Carr has mentioned the passing of some regular callers, like "Nightingales Guy" and the more recent caller who pronounced Mar-a-Lago as "Magga Lago"

Do they allow 55+ to take part in ratings surveys ?
If they do what percentage are they ?

Nielsen has about two dozen demographic characteristics, called "stratification variables" that are measured in as close proportion to the actual percentages in the market as possible.

These include all age "breaks" from 6-11 year old kinds to 65 and older adults, following the Census breaks of 12-17, 18-24, 25-35 and so on.

They also sample proportionally men and women, Blacks, Hispanics and Non-Hispanic whites, several income and geographic levels and geographic zones in the market (generally counties but including HDHA and HDBA area). By proportional, I mean that if 10% of the market is Hispanic, 10% of the sample will be Hispanic.

So you're saying the drop in ratings is due to death? That might be true.

No, not at all what I meant.

One, like myself, could perhaps be forgiven for thinking that, given the unappealing choices of formats in the Boston market, that the 55+ demo (and more so for 65+) does not matter to advertisers, so broadcasters shouldn't be bothered programming for us.

When I mentioned in another thread how clever I thought Michael Coleman's WBZ weather promos for the 2017-2018 winter were - they were parodies of Bill Haley's "Shake, Rattle, and Roll" and Peter Frampton's "Show Me The Way" - someone retorted that those particular selections were at least 40 years old and had little relevance to today's audience. So, my point with "lay down and die" is what it seems we aging boomers are supposed to do, since most radio broadcasters don't care about us.

That's crazy. Boston just added a Breeze station playing music that was popular when you were in college. You should be thrilled. There are also stations in the suburbs playing 60s oldies. Meanwhile the talk stations are still hosted by people who are your age. Wait a few years when they get replaced by kids. Then you can complain.

Breeze on HD radio only for now but we'll see, and yes about oldies stations.
Not sure what per cent of area listeners have HD.There are some car stereos with it, some expensive home units, and some affordable portables.

My $50 Insignia "tabletop/portable" has good selectivity and I can get a lot of HD2 and HD3 stations well.
Some of them are FM homes for AMs like WRKO and WBZ, and Bloomberg (the Boston 106.1 is technically an FM translator for 1330 and can be picked up both on 106.1 main signal and on WBOS HD2.

Some HD2s and HD3s are gone like Radio Mojo blues and Freeform WBCN but there's still the Bone, Evolution, Irish 96.9, WODS oldies etc and yes now the Breeze. The "find your station" list on the HD site and app are outdated but listeners can just search on their own..
HDs also can be useful for those who have trouble getting WCRB, WEEI-FM and WAAF.

WRKO looks to be taking a bad hit. Gee, you don't think it's due to the screwing around with its lineup, do you?

I think the casual political audience has checked out until Presidential primary season. If anything, the lull between cycles may be a good time to move things around.

Hmmm, having pretty much "checked out" of political talk myself - I mean, just how much Russian collusion and Southern border talk can one put up with? - I have to agree that what you've written here makes sense.

Happy New Year!

Which started yesterday.
I was having a really pleasant day yesterday...until I heard Bloomberg news-radio air that item about Senator Warren.

NOT because it was about her personally...but because I just didn't want to be reminded SO SOON that another Presidential election cycle is on its way!

I realize we have...essentially...an ETERNAL political cycle...I guess I just wanted to be free of it for one more day.

WBZ - seem to be in their normal trend. If the weather gets bad in Jan/Feb they will jump up some. I don't see the news content being much different than it ever was. They always relied on WBZ-TV somewhat and that still seems to be about the same. Branding changes - other than the radio geeks on this board how many people notice/care.

WRKO - I don't think the lineup change was in place long enough to affect the Dec. book. They were up in the fall but the election probably drove some of that.

WBZ - I'm happy that they've gotten ABC News Radio back. I just wish they'd use both CBS and ABC RADIO news feeds for their actualities instead of getting audio from TV stations all over the map. Audio from TV news does NOT translate well to radio. One of my Christmas wishes - and I didn't get it yet - was that WBZ Radio and WBZ-TV could somehow partner once again for live on-air interactions, say, for the weather when there's an impending storm.

WRKO - I know it was sometimes off-the-wall but I think the WRKO Morning Show with Kim and VB was not as bad as some here made it out to be.

Talk stations take a hit during the holidays. When WMJX and WSRS are playing Sinatra, Nat King Cole and Bing Crosby in regular rotation, some talk listeners will migrate to Christmas stations.

And yes, all-news gets a boost when the winter weather is bad. A big snowfall usually gives all-news stations a real shot in the arm!
