2019 Television Predictions

What are your 2019 TV Predictions

My predictions are that Disney will have majority control of Hulu.

The Nexstar/Tribune talks continue

The Sinclair Pundits will get called out more for their rants as usual.

Traditional real-time viewership will continue to fall.

And viewers will continue to "cut the cord." My ex contacted me because she wanted me to cancel DirecTV...it was in my name, though we don't share an address at this time. I was surprised because, unlike me, she is a conventional broadcast TV viewer, and mostly prefers the shows on the traditional "Big 4." But now that you can stream these shows on multiple services - even if you have to subscribe to 4 or 5 of them, the cost is much lower than cable or satellite. I assume she is getting her national and local news now like I do - streamed from the internet - usually on my phone.

So if a 65 year old woman rather set in her ways - is cutting the cord, you've got to figure that millenials, GenXers, GenYers, etc. - are cutting the cord by the hundreds of thousands, or perhaps have never even had cable or satellite as adults.

MY PREDICTIONS:

On either Wheel of Fortune or Jeopardy!, Pat or Alex announce their retirement.

Julie Chen Moonves leaves Big Brother due to her husband's termination and denial of $120,000,000 severance package from CBS - the show goes on with a new host, likely Jeff Schroeder.

One of the four remaining soaps gets cancelled, probably Bold & The Beautiful. Whichever soap it is, the network gives back the hour to the affiliates or replaces it with yet another cheap talkfest.

ABC cancels American Idol after two seasons on the network due to low ratings, it is replaced by yet another season of Dancing with the Stars...I meant running out of stars to choose from!

At least one pageant show goes bye bye due to the #MeToo movement and a sexual harassment charge against someone (or many people) involved with the contestants. Not to mention, low ratings. It isn't 1979 anymore.

ABC, NBC and CBS produce big-league specials commemorating the 50th anniversary of Neil Armstrong's Apollo 11 moon landing.

my predictions for TV in 2019:

ABC cancels World News Now, the overnight news show thus ending a era for news programs on TV, thus forcing insomniac news watchers to go to pre-taped cable news or streaming news outlets for overnight news

NASCAR ratings will reach record lows.

like NASCAR, WWE Raw and SmackDown will reach record low ratings during the early part of the year, but SmackDown will see a ratings increase at the start of it's run on Fox in late 2019.

all Cable TV news channels will see ratings increase when the Mueller investigation leads to the impeachment of President Trump or the reaction of the outage caused by either a impeachment or him finding a way to avoid being forced out of office and put behind bars.

The Weather Channel will have a ratings increase after several major weather events happens during 2019, even as early as the start of next month with the next name winter weather outbreak.

Nexstar completes Tribune Media buyout and makes KDAF (the Dallas/Fort Worth, TX CW station) it's flagship as it will retain their Irving, TX (Irving is a Dallas suburb) headquarters.

Sinclair/Tribune Media lawsuit is settled out of court.

Univision and Dish will settle their lawsuit and restores all Unvision owned networks on Dish's lineup ending their dispute.

the networks keep rebooting old TV shows, as was the trend this year.

ESPN will see major ratings dip for everything they have, even Sportscenter.

That's interesting. Co-anchor Kendis Gibson just left the show last week. So his timing might support your prediction.

My theory is that ABC News will replace the 90 minute show with their own version of CBSN, a low cost digital news service that can be used as overnight content, just as CBS stations use CBSN. It will also be available for digital sub-channels and online.

Nexstar will properly spin off stations in conflict markets with Tribune (including some legacy Nexstar stations). Gray, Scripps, and/or even Sinclair pick up some of the divestments each

I can see San Francisco in the running to be the first to have a 3am newscast. But that's because you hear of stories of people from Stockton commuting to San Jose though.

https://www.cnbc.com/2018/08/20/pr-...to-avoid-45000-dollar-san-francisco-rent.html

Here are the reasons why I say a 3am Newscast will be in San Francisco and Sacramento First.

But back to this thread Fox will still be in the running for Divested Nexstar Fox affiliates like KSWB, KCPQ and KTXL.

Sinclair will overtake Fox News for RNC Viewers as part of the 2019 predictions.

There is no such thing as "RNC viewers" and in most markets the Big 4 broadcast networks have larger ratings than any cable network.

These super-commutes are why KPIX is still carried on cable in Tracy. I'm a little surprised more aren't at least partially carried in places such as Stockton, Davis, and even Modesto (i.e. local news shared with a local access channel) unless syndex applies to local news.

In Solano County, CA (Ie Fairfield, Vacaville, Suisun City and Dixon) we get both Sacramento and San Francisco TV stations due to Solano COunty being the commuter County for two distinct Census areas as mentioned here.

https://solanoedc.org/data-center/data/transportation/

In this study that Solano County, CA released it mentioned where its residents are going to. I can see 3am Local news starting in Sacramento and San Francisco first before happening in other parts of the country.

PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION
Add to report
As part of the 9-county Bay Area commuter ecosystem, Solano sees 107,000 residents commute daily toward San Francisco, Silicon Valley, and Sacramento. To alleviate congestion, public transportation systems include bus, ferry services, and rail. The Suisun/Fairfield AMTRAK station was recently renovated to better accommodate Capitol Corridor commuters.

Because, as was mentioned in another thread, all of the providers will be raising their rates as of Jan 1.
Consider it accurate. I just got my January Comcast bill. It went up $13.

Seems like a very plausible theory. That said, in fairness, four years or so on that schedule is no easy task. I could see someone deciding to move on.

More Sub channels will be started. Channels like Baynews9 will go national. Sporting News will start a TV Channel same with Turner start a Sports Channel. A channel like WGN will be started in Orlando and KC.
