This post looks at the week of April 5-11, 1987. This week saw the rollout of the Fox Broadcasting Company's prime time lineup; Fox began operations on October 6, 1986 with the debut of The Late Show Starring Joan Rivers, with KAUT (channel 43) as the network's charter affiliate for the Oklahoma City market. Fox's prime time efforts began on Sunday, April 5, with the debuts of Married... with Children (which eventually became, and remains as of 2019, the network's longest-running live-action sitcom) and The Tracey Ullman Show (which served as the progenitor of The Simpsons, the longest-running scripted prime time program in U.S. television history, which began as a series of animated shorts that aired during the sketch comedy series, featuring Ullman cast members Dan Castellaneta and Julie Kavner voicing Homer and Marge Simpson, respectively, as well as other characters).
The Fox Broadcasting Company is the only successful effort at a fourth commercial television network in United States television history, eventually gaining stature with a list of early hits like Married... with Children, The Simpsons, Beverly Hills, 90210, 21 Jump Street, Cops, In Living Color and America's Most Wanted and eventually started what has become a very robust sports division with the acquisition of National Football Conference television rights (assumed from CBS) in 1994. The Fox affiliation in Oklahoma City would eventually transfer from KAUT to KOKH-TV (channel 25) – which originally passed over the affiliation in 1986 due to concerns over disruptions to the station's prime time film schedule – in August 1991, after former KAUT owner Heritage Media donated the channel 43 license to the Oklahoma Educational Television Authority (OETA) and purchased channel25 from Busse Broadcast Holdings.
