Bishop Street Tower (Former Star94 tower) coming down

It looks like the old Bishop street tower---used by 94.1 for many years as a backup site---is coming down. I noticed the tower workers rigging the tower today. The old FM antenna is already gone from the top.

Isn't that the unkept stand alone at the end of Bishop which hasn't been painted in ages that has like 12 bays on the northeast side...was it ever used, they had to run enormous power with all those bays and the small height to get a good signal out.

I don't know what's planned for that lot, but the view of the Buckhead, Midtown and Downtown skylines is spectacular.

I actually drove up to the gate a couple of weeks ago. That lot is not good for much. The access to the lot is terrible. But, I do agree, it does have a spectacular view.

WSTR-FM still has a auxiliary license on this tower and WQXI-AM has a 948.5 MHz STL license transmitting at this site.

Well, they may hold the paper, but they don't have the equipment. Everything has been removed from the tower. There is still some cable, but that is about it.

With out getting too technical, in general the more bays on a FM antenna (narrow tuned) the greater the gain, especially the old non circular polarized old antennas. Community (shared) antennas are a little different because the different frequencies' wavelength.

That site has been decommissioned. The tower with the 12 bays is WRAS-FM at the edge of the Georgia Tech campus.

The tower on the edge of the Tech campus that backs up to Northside Drive is WREK.

IIRC WRAS is south of I-20, near WGST's tower.

You're correct. I meant to say WREK but must not have been thinking too clearly. But...WRAS is not at the Panthersville site any longer. They moved a couple of years ago to the candelabra tower off I-20 east of the former Turner Field. Last year, WSTR also moved to that tower.

WRAS had to decrease its wattage by half to 50KW, but the height is much greater, and the site is more centralized, giving WRAS a much better signal in Atlanta.

Last year, this property was listed at $4.25 million, and has since been sold, to a developer from Columbus of all places. I hate to see any tower come down, but in that price range, I would probably sell it myself.

How many acres was it?
When the TV46 property (4 acres), right across the tracks, was bought (almost 20 years ago) it went for $1M an acre.
