WNYC’s 2018 audience levels

In a recent press release, WNYC announced it had achieved record audience levels—in size and diversity—last year.

According to data from Nielsen Audio, WNYC 93.9 FM’s December average weekly audience of 969,300 was the largest for any month, and the Fall 2018 average weekly audience of 947,100 was the largest for any quarter. Further, the other three quarters of 2018 (Winter, Spring, Summer) represent the station’s next largest quarterly averages.

Nielsen data also shows that in 2018, WNYC-FM reached its most diverse audience ever, with Black and Hispanic listeners comprising 30 percent of the station’s audience.

Looking at the last set of ratings (December), I am amazed at how well NPR stations are doing in every market.

Is part of the reason that only a few markets have a news station on FM...and NPR fills that void for the younger (>55) age group?

I think NPR stations tend to attract wealthier, better educated listeners, but not necessarily younger ones. Moat listeners in the lower half of 25-54 aren't using radio for news or political talk at all. It's music, music, music for them, with sports talk and play-by-play doing well among males.
