WYRKin' for a living

I guess we don't have many country music fans here. WYRK has revamped their morning show, adding Val Townsend (former WEDG, WHTT, WMSX) to the morning show. In fact, it looks like a lot of parts are moving at Townsquare.

So once again TSM keeps someone on the payroll rather than going out and getting someone new. Good for those former MIXers.

And Rox, you're right - on this board there aren't many country fans. But bring up WECK and this place lights up like the Falls at night.

That’s because at WECK, there are things happening that are very positive. We are a player now in Buffalo radio. As for country, I am. p1. That’s all I listen to is country, but I have not listened to YRK in about 3 years. I listen to Sirius Xm or amazon music. I worked at YRK for over a decade on air. That was fun radio , inside and out. YRK is nothing but a shell now. You will not see it ranked number 1 again 12 plus. They have abandon their true country listeners and real country fans are disenfranchised by the music

WYRK can label itself "country" all they want... but, because of the general state of "modern" (so-called) country music, they ain't hardly country. The pendulum will swing, no doubt. There's a ton of modern/contemporary country stuff that is still solidly country. It's not terribly obscure. Why that doesn't get (at least some) time, I haven't a clue.

I've dropped some WYRK listening time over the past year or so. The (new) "Clay & Company" - IMO - is improved. With all due respect, I was not a fan of Liz Mantel... and, frankly, Dale Mussen's departure didn't mean much to me. Moden is kinda like a rock... and Townsend seems like a good sidevoice... though I'm not convinced that she can be engaging in the long haul. "Producer Rob" probably has potential in that mix, but I don't think he is there just yet. He seems hesitant. I gather that Moden does not have the latitude to choose music for his show(???). I'd like to see what he could do in that regard. He seems savvy enough that it wouldn't be wall-to-wall George Strait... but, rather, a diverse mix that'd cover "the masses".

I, too, find myself on Sirius XM's 55 to 59 a fair amount. but, again, due to the state of modern country, that's dimished, too.

CHUM-FM has found it's way to increased time in my ear.

Bet a lot of stations in Buffalo would give their left lugnut to have WYRK's numbers both billing and ratings. Cough. Chortle. WXRL would love to have a quarter of WYRK's 12+. Listeners must like what they hear because from everything I've seen on this board or in the trades, the station's been #1 since dirt was invented. BTW, Fifty years ago Country stations were playing Johnny and June, Tammy and Dolly, Conway Twitty, Merle and Glen Campbell. The hits. Campbell was sometimes derided for "not being real country" because his music crossed over. "That ain't Country!" Guess times don't much change, eh.

Would it be stating the obvious to say that how country music has changed its taste as well as the music that makes it to the playlist may be PARTS of the reason why WYRK may never reach #1 in 12+ again? (For the record, I cannot get into country music. That's the one Buffalo station I spend the LEAST time listening to.)

Huh? I predict they're return to #1 in the next book. Winter is traditionally a down period nationally for the country format. It always rebounds in the spring.

The station in the #1 spot now is owned by the same company that owns WYRK, so the money is all going to the same pocket.

Winter P1 trend shows that WYRK declined to a 8.1. WBLK widened their lead over their sister station again. Maybe that Country Flavour has gone stale.

The debut of the Breeze induced some yawns...

Remember that the phase one trend reports are a minimally weighted average of two months from Fall and one month from Winter. Because of the multi-week hiatus at Christmas as well as the atypical last 4 weeks of Fall, this phase one is the most unreliable of them all.

The terrible wobble in the trend reports is one of the main reason why mid-year will see all diary markets go to a properly balanced and weighted rolling average for all reports.
