Creator Linda Bloodworth Thomason will return to pen the script for the Disney-owned broadcaster.
Designing Women just took a big step closer to its TV return.
Twenty-five years after wrapping its seven-season run, ABC has handed out a script commitment to what is being billed as a "sequel" to the CBS comedy from original series creator Linda Bloodworth Thomason and executive producer Harry Thomason.
The new Designing Women — which is a multicamera comedy like its predecessor — will follow the next generation of Sugarbakers with a crop of new, young, female designers at an Atlanta interior design firm. The new take will still have the same razor-sharp dialogue and ability to cut through the political, cultural and social factions that rarely agree on anything. Bloodworth Thomason will pen the script and exec produce alongside her husband, Thomason.
The project, which has been in the works for months with the ABC deal being worked out over the past few weeks, comes from the same studio that produced the original in Sony Pictures Television. Sources say original castmembers will occasionally stop by should the new take move to series.
"I'm very excited to be working with ABC. And Sony has always been a great partner for Designing Women. Normally, I'm not a fan of reboots but Designing Women does seem to have the right fengshui for all that is going on right now. We could definitely have some fun," Bloodworth Thomason told The Hollywood Reporter a day after she penned a blistering guest column in which she revealed that former CBS CEO Leslie Moonves kept her shows off the air for seven years.
Dixie Carter, Delta Burke, Annie Potts, Jean Smart and Meshach Taylor starred on the original multicamera comedy, which took on subjects including women's rights, domestic abuse, homophobia and racism during its run from 1986-1993. A season two episode exploring AIDS prejudice — inspired by Bloodworth Thomason, whose mother died from the disease — earned two Emmy nominations. Designing Women was nominated multiple times for the best comedy Emmy but never took home the trophy in the category. Burke earned two lead actress noms, and Taylor was also nominated.
The drama, from writers Matt Olmstead and Nick Wootton, counts original creator Steven Bochco's son and wife among its exec producers.
ABC is looking to bring back one of its most critically hailed drama series.
The network has handed out a sizable pilot-production commitment to a sequel of NYPD Blue.
The return of the series follows Andy Sipowicz's (original star Dennis Franz) son, Theo, as he tries to earn his detective shield and work in the 15th squad while investigating his father's murder.
Matt Olmstead (Chicago PD) will pen the script alongside Nick Wootton, both of whom worked on the original ABC drama. Both will executive produce alongside Steven Bochco's son, Jesse, and the late creator's wife, Dayna Bochco. Jesse Bochco was a producer and director on the original series and is also on board to helm the potential pilot of the ABC reboot.
The project is a co-production between ABC Studios and 20th Century Fox Television, with the latter studio having produced the original series. NYPD Blue originally ran from 1993-2005 on ABC. During its 12-season, 261-episode run, the show earned 84 Emmy nominations, taking home the best drama series trophy in 1995, a year after it earned the Golden Globe in the same category. The series was created by Bochco and David Milch.
Franz starred as detective Andy Sipowicz for the show's entire 12-season run. Theo was born to Andy and love interest Sylvia (played by star Sharon Lawrence) near the end of season three.
A long-talked-about revival of CBS’ cult fave drama series Northern Exposure is moving forward. The project has been put in development at CBS with original series star Rob Morrow set to reprise his role and executive produce. It hails from original series co-creators Josh Brand and John Falsey, actor John Corbett, Morrow, Ben Silverman and Universal TV.
Written by Brand, the revival centers on Dr. Joel Fleischman, played by Morrow, who returns to Cicely, Alaska, for the funeral of an old friend and finds a new set of quirky characters and reunites with old ones in this continuation of the classic series.
Brand executive produces with Falsey, Morrow and Silverman. Corbett produces. Universal TV is the studio.
EXCLUSIVE: ABC, which is rebooting its iconic series NYPD Blue, also is looking to bring back another 1990s New York cop drama, Dick Wolf’s New York Undercover. I hear ABC is in talks for a new incarnation of New York Undercover, which will be written by Hand of God creator Ben Watkins. The project from Wolf Entertainment is expected to be a co-production between Universal TV, where the company is based, and ABC Studios.
Wolf would executive produce with Watkins and Wolf Entertainment’s Arthur Forney and Peter Jankowski.
Created by Wolf and Kevin Arkadie, New York Undercover aired on Fox for four seasons, between 1994-98. It starred Malik Yoba and Michael DeLorenzo as two undercover detectives in New York City’s Fourth Precinct. It was the first police drama on American television to feature two people of color in the starring roles.

It’s official: a Beverly Hills, 90210 revival is in the works!
Tori Spelling, who starred in the original ’90s series, confirmed the exciting news on Access on Friday, when she said, “did I just confirm something that wasn’t known?”
“We were having coffee in between meetings with networks,” Spelling, 45, explained about a recent paparazzi photo of the cast. “It’s confirmed. We’re doing a new 90210.”

Hulu has slotted July 26 for its eight-episode revival series Veronica Mars, from original series creator Rob Thomas.
The premiere date was revealed via Twitter, along with a short teaser for the new episodes (see above), in which Kristen Bell’s titular sleuth prepares for spring break in Neptune.
The reboot returns star Bell, Enrico Colantoni and Jason Dohring to the series that ran for three seasons on UPN and the CW from 2004-2007. In the revival, spring breakers are getting murdered in Neptune, thereby decimating the seaside town’s lifeblood tourist industry. After Mars Investigations is hired by the parents of one of the victims to find their son’s killer, Veronica (Bell) is drawn into an epic mystery that pits the enclave’s wealthy elites, who would rather put an end to the month-long bacchanalia, against a working class that relies on the cash influx that comes with being the West Coast’s answer to Daytona Beach.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — “All in the Family” and “The Jeffersons” are coming back to TV, live and for one night only.
Woody Harrelson, Marisa Tomei, Jamie Foxx and Wanda Sykes will star in re-creations of episodes from the influential sitcoms born in the 1970s.
Norman Lear, who created “All in the Family” and its spinoff “The Jeffersons,” and Jimmy Kimmel are hosting the ABC prime-time special airing next month, the network said Thursday.
Harrelson and Tomei will play Archie and Edith Bunker, with Foxx and Sykes as George and Louise Jefferson. Ellie Kemper, Justina Machado and Will Ferrell also will appear, ABC said, with more stars to be announced.
