Is radio.com expanding beyond entercom stations?

https://radioinsight.com/headlines/173905/is-radio-com-expanding-beyond-entercom-stations/

Currently there's speculation that Cox Radio and Bonneville are going to the Radio.com app along with Entercom owned stations.

. A viewing of the station listings on the Radio.com iOS app has empty placeholders for markets where Cox Media Group operates beyond the markets it competes with Entercom. Those include: Athens, Dayton, Jacksonville, Long Island, San Antonio, Tampa and Tulsa.

One additional US market listed is Salt Lake City. Of the six markets that Bonneville operates in, that is the only one where it does not compete against Entercom. A Salt Lake City only operator such as Broadway Media could also be a possibility there. A blank tab for International stations has also been added.

Your guess is as good or better than anyone else’s. Cox is on iHeart and TuneIn. Bonneville was briefly on iHeart without leaving TuneIn.

My best guess would be that these deals with Radio.com would be non-exclusive, but, with Entercom not having done this before, nobody knows.

and now Entercom has announced that radio.com is going to get content from Cox and Bonneville radio via partnerships.

PHILADELPHIA, PA – February 22, 2019 – Entercom, a leading media and entertainment company and one of the two largest radio broadcasters in the U.S., announced content distribution partnerships with Cox Radio and Bonneville. As part of the agreements, RADIO.COM, the fastest-growing digital audio app in the U.S., will launch live channels for all Cox Radio and Bonneville radio stations nationwide, and will also add premium on-demand audio and podcasts from both companies in the coming weeks. This announcement follows RADIO.COM’s recent content distribution agreements with CNN and Bloomberg Media.

“We are pleased to welcome Cox Media Group’s radio stations and Bonneville and their great content to the RADIO.COM platform as we continue to expand our premium content offerings to super-serve our large and rapidly growing audience of listeners across hundreds of devices,” said J.D. Crowley, Chief Digital Officer, Entercom. “Great partnerships like these further strengthen RADIO.COM’s position as the premiere destination for live and on-demand audio news, entertainment, music and sports content in markets all across the U.S.”

Could Entercom expand Radio.com into international markets like Canada, Mexico, UK and Australia. If so, then in canada, they could partner with either Corus Entertainment or Rogers Media to launch a canadian version of Radio.com

That way, it can allow them to truly compete with iHeartRadio. I wish they could advertise radio.com through TV ads. That will be a win-win for them

What happens to the Cox stations on iHeartRadio?

As the Big A mentions, there was no indication in the press release that this was an exclusive deal. Of course, press releases don't always have every little detail.

So, we won't know for certain until, or shortly after, the Cox and Bonneville stations show up on Radio.com. Bloomberg, however, remains in iHeart and TuneIn since being added to Radio.com. That's definitely a good sign.

The smart move would be to have your signal on all of them.

I would agree, though I could see how it might not be practical for everybody. An acquaintance of mine has an HD2/translator/rimshot station and a full-power station. Only the first is on iHeartRadio because he didn’t want to carry the iHeartRadio spotload on his main station.

When Cumulus first joined iHeart, it had to carry 3 spots/day M-F plus two on Saturday. It also had to mention iHeartRadio a certain number of times a day. I'm guessing Cox has a similar deal with iHeart, and the Radio.com deal is probably about the same.

But iHeart pays the royalties, right? I understand the spots could be more than the royalties, but it explains how iHeart's digital platform is making a profit while Pandora isn't.

I wasn’t under the impression that iHeart paid the royalties, but I've never been high enough on the food chain to be involved in discussions like that. You probably know more than I do about that!

Speaking of streaming platforms, as we're waiting for Bonneville and Cox to show up on Radio.com, Entravision has quietly added its stations to iHeartRadio. They also appear to remain on TuneIn.

It seems to me that some ex-CBS Radio stations in Sacramento and San Francisco like KNCI, KYMX and Movin 99.7 will return the Radio.com app very soon
