ION advertising other networks?

The one thing I don't understand about ION: Why do they run advertisements for programs on other networks? I think there was an ABC spot for American Idol a few nights ago. I've seen ads for NBC a couple of times.

Also, how does an ION station survive? I never see a single thing that's local on an ION station except for the legal ID on the hour.

1: $
2: they don’t need local for that business model

From what I've seen ION is operated more like a cable network even though they have OTA stations and also the national network that is carried on cable systems like where I am with no local OTA station. Cable systems advertise shows on OTA and cable networks so I don't see where this is any different.

anotherguy is right: Ion operates more like a cable network. They get good numbers too. They get 1-1.5 million viewers on average for their shows in prime time. That's better than the CW many nights and comparable to many cable networks. I don't believe they sell local ads. At the very least, I've never seen any local ads.

I saw an NBC affiliate air an ad for "Mental Samurai". Which is on Fox. Not a case of a co-owned station, as the Fox and MyNetwork stations are co-owned in Charlotte.

Ion Life now seems to be positioned as a scripted TV drama channel and has moved away from the lifestyle programs. All it has is reruns of just 4 series on a loop The Listener, Saving Hope, White Collar and Rookie Blue and the odd lifestyle show thrown in. Surely they can acquire the rights to more than 4 shows or air more shows that are on the main Ion channel?
