The Programming Disputes Thread

Yes, been getting ads on several webpages saying that DIRECTV could dump 23 channels and there's an 888 number to call.
IMO, most of those channels wouldn't be a big loss to me, as most of them are either kids related, or have shows with a gazillion commercials (TV Land? Paramount Network? 36-minute Two and a Half Men's?)
And Northwest Broadcasting is still off DirecTV with no end in sight. Brian Brady once again blaming DIRECTV for dumping Fox 11 Tri-Cities, KYMA NBC Yuma, KSWT CBS Yuma, etc. Spectrum pulled this s--t last year. That's one of the reasons I *LEFT*! And now it's followed me to DIRECTV! What, will Dish dump them in 2020? No wonder we have an emergency antenna and all I have to do is flip it to 41-1 for Fox in 1080i.

looks like AT&T & Viacom are about to a nasty prolong dispute as the Viacom owned networks will be removed on Friday if no new agreement is reached between now and Friday, and Viacom is in full "Propaganda" mode attacking AT&T in their dispute related ads. and already have the keepviacom.com site up and they are basally saying in the site that AT&T's post-TimeWarner merger seems to make it favorable for a nasty long term dispute, let's hope this does last for many years like the SuddenLink/Viacom dispute lasted.

I was seriously considering switching to DirecTV Now or to DirecTV when they make their streaming service available, but with the recent announcements that DirecTV Now is dropping the Viacom channels and raising their prices by $10 a month, and now that there is a dispute with Viacom on the regular service, I am definitely ruling them out.

I know that this is another situation where Viacom is just as guilty as DirecTV, but DirecTV has definitely lost any chances of my becoming a customer.

Byron Allen doing it again pulling the race card so that cable systems have to out his programming in. Sheesh. He's not exactly Tyler Perry or Lee Daniels; his shows are subpar. At least The Weather Channel was untouched and is still fine. This is still a sleazy and perverse way to be on cable systems (which are already in trouble by streaming taking their business away).

Yes...cheap programming, the court shows, Comics Unleashed, and especially that half-ripoff of Hollywood Squares called 'Funny You Should Ask' that gives away a top prize of $5,000. Lol. 2019? Nah, more like 1979. Where I live, the CBS station puts it on at noon. It's boring. I'd rather see noon news.

and now, AT&T has done something that has never happened before in terms of the impending takedown of channels. they have started censoring the "dispute warning" tickers and it's causing Viacom to rearrange the tickers, but AT&T still find ways to censor it.

i won't be surprised if this leads to a early takedown of the channes and the dispute become a "gone forever" type where they are willing to drop these channels for good as both sides are being super petty about this dispute due to Viacom losing ratings and the fact AT&T bought out one of Viacom biggest rivals, Time Warner.

Remember in 2012, DirecTV pulled Viacom, and they proceeded to cut off streaming access to everyone in America for their Nickelodeon, Spike, MTV, etc. shows. Wasn't just DIRECTV subs that lost in that 10 or so day battle.

and i can see a repeat of that and this time, people will have no choice to chose between stealing the content from sites that post full episodes in a illegal violate the DCMA way or get it thought new legal options like Sling TV, or Fubo TV or Amazon Prime for certain content.

Viacom surely is playing the Petty game and AT&T is trying to be more Petty then The King of NASCAR.

Both companies are in trouble and need each other for content.

Will they go as far as hiding their Nickelodeon, BET, MTV, etc. accounts as 'private' on YouTube to prevent anyone watching clips? Will the copyright 'strikes' fly for anyone who posts even a PROMO from MTV?

Viacom is also a liar. They claim DIRECTV has removed channels. We've been DirecTV subscribers since April 2016 and as far as I know the only channels DIRECTV has removed are channels that have gone out of business such as Esquire Network, Chiller, Cloo, and pivot. The only other removal I know of is when they replaced Weather Nation with the Accu-Weather Channel in 2018.

here's a new update on the Viacom/AT&T dispute with new statements from both sides's after passing the Friday Night/Saturday Morning at 12 AM EDT deadline

Viacom's statement from http://ww.keepviacom.com:
Thank you for your patience as we work to reach an agreement with AT&T-DIRECTV to keep Viacom channels on the air.

AT&T's statement from https://tvpromise.att.com/
We continue to work with Viacom to avoid any interruption to its channels. We strive to give our customers more choice and value, and we will provide updates on this website as they come in.

it looks like they reached a short term agreement to keep the channels on the air during the rest of the negotiations.

Now the FCC looks into the DBS and Broadcaster's battle

The FCC sought comment on the NAB/NCTA proposal by January, but as with a number of dockets, the deadline was delayed by the government shutdown and reply comments have been coming in this week.

Under the joint plan, "a commercial broadcast TV station would be required to send notice of its must carry or retransmission consent election to a cable operator only if the station changed its election status from its previous election. In those cases, the broadcaster would send its notice to an email address listed in the cable operator’s online public file or in the FCC’s Cable Operations and Licensing System (COALS) database, for cable operators that do not have an online public file."

Dish is in a contract dispute with Cox/Apollo over carriage fees

1 . What is happening?

By law, KIRO 7 must negotiate carriage agreements with satellite companies like DISH. Usually, these deals are reached without any disruption to your service. In fact, our company has negotiated dozens of agreements with only the rarest of disruptions. Unfortunately, so far, DISH has refused to reach a fair, market-based deal to carry KIRO 7. Our existing agreement with DISH expires at 4 PM Pacific Time on March 31, 2019. If no deal is reached before that date, you will lose live access to the shows, sports and local news on KIRO 7, which you rely on and are paying for. We are continuing to negotiate with DISH, but DISH has refused to agree to reasonable terms for the valuable programming we provide.

2. How can I watch KIRO 7 – and the upcoming Final Four – if this issue is not resolved?

All NCAA Tournament games are available on KIRO 7 free, over-the-air with an antenna. The game will also be livestreamed on several web sites and apps, including:

CBS All Access will feature all of the tournament games airing on the network. There is a seven-day free trial of CBS All Access available before a $6 monthly fee kicks in.
NCAA March Madness Live is accessible both through a website and a downloadable app that’s compatible with many different devices.

3. As a DISH customer, what can I do to continue to watch my favorite shows on KIRO 7?

The best thing viewers can do is Call DISH at 1-800-333-3474. Tell DISH that you pay them a lot of money to watch your favorite shows on KIRO 7, including the KIRO 7 News, NCAA Tournament, NFL games, Big Bang Theory, and more. Tell DISH that if it drops KIRO 7, then you will drop DISH.

4. Why does KIRO 7 charge cable and satellite operators a fee to carry their programming?

KIRO 7 is among the highest rated channels on DISH. Producing and broadcasting high rated, top-quality programming is very expensive. We invest hundreds of thousands of dollars in our local news, weather, and emergency programming. Without the fees from cable and satellite operators, this would not be possible. KIRO 7 could not afford to broadcast [list popular programming, etc.].

5. What is a “fair” deal for KIRO 7’s programming and why is DISH refusing to pay it?

We have proposed that DISH renew our previous agreement on substantially the same terms as the old agreement. DISH refused. We have carriage agreements with every other major cable and satellite company that is carrying KIRO 7, including DirecTV and Comcast.

6. What does DISH pay for other channels?

Based on publicly available information, DISH pays over $6 per subscriber per month for ESPN. In other words, $6 from your monthly bill goes straight to ESPN. Our ratings are much higher than ESPN’s! Yet, we are asking for far less what DISH pays to ESPN. More importantly, ESPN has NO local programming, NO local employees, NO local investments, and a very small local audience – unlike KIRO 7.
