Phoenix on the NextGen Initial Rollout List

In what should come as no surprise to anyone, Phoenix has been selected as one of the cities that should see a live NextGen TV station by the end of the year.

Phoenix already has one experimental station - KFPH-CD - with a request for another - KASW - but those are not available to the general public. The new station will be, provided one has the right equipment. NextGen TV is based on the still-evolving ATSC 3.0 standard, which is incompatible with the current ATSC 1.0 standard.

Most likely, but stations cannot turn off their ATSC 1.0 signals until at least five years after ATSC 3.0 rollout, so existing TVs will be good until at least then. We should begin seeing TVs with ATSC 3.0 tuners and converter boxes before too long - hopefully by the end of the year.
 
Bumping to add some information that was in an ex parte filing last month.

With Scripps acquiring KASW, the KASW facility is slated to be converted to high-power ATSC 3.0, and they are going to do some interesting things for it.

First off, all of its subchannels would be hosted on other stations. CW and Grit will be on KNXV, Escape will go on the KSAZ mux along with Antenna TV from KNXV, HSN will be put on the KUTP mux, and KPHO's mux adds Escape-via-KFPH.

KASW then goes ATSC 3.0 as a four-site DTS (the other SFN sites are Shaw Butte, Gila Bend, and "Riviera" which I'm guessing is Crown King). Space on the KFPH-CD mux will be freed up by moving Fox, ABC, CBS and KUTP to the KASW mux.

The only place named Riviera that I've ever heard of is now part of Bullhead City, but unless they're doing long-distance translator testing, that doesn't make any sense.

I was expecting Scripps to drop HSN. No major media group outside of ION puts home shopping on their subchannels.

Crown King is a logical guess, considering that Riviera Broadcast Group has three radio stations broadcasting from there, but it's outside their authorized signal contour. I believe that an SFN must remain within the authorized signal contour. Looking at KASW's coverage map from RabbitEars, there are four major populated areas within the authorized contour that are shielded from the signal: behind North Mtn. (Shaw Butte), behind the Estrella Mtns. (Gila Bend), behind the White Tank Mtns., where development is beginning to occur, and behind the San Tan Mtns., where San Tan Valley has sprung up as a community of 100,000+ residents. I could see the need to put a site in either of the last two areas. San Tan is more developed right now, and Riviera Broadcast Group has their KZON tower in the Queen Creek/San Tan Valley area, so "Riviera" could be that.
