Lara Logan will do segments for the Sinclair Owned stations

"There's no interference whatsoever," Logan told THR. "The mandate is to just go down there and come back with great stories. That's it. ... I never expected that at this point in my career, after all these years, I would have that kind of freedom."

Logan, who lives in Texas but has never covered the border dispute before, has become a star in conservative circles since appearing on a Feb. 15 podcast and criticizing the mainstream media as left-leaning. She's appeared regularly on Fox News opinion shows in recent weeks, leading to speculation that she could join the network.

"I'm not looking for the big contract and the big pedestal from which they can knock me down," said Logan, adding that Sinclair approached her agent with the reporting opportunity.

"We've had conversations on and off for probably more than a year," said Scott Livingston, Sinclair's vp news. "We're thrilled to have her on our team. I think she's a great fit. She's smart, dynamic, resilient and tough as nails. She's an incredible journalist. ... To be able to add an elite reporter to our team is an incredible opportunity for us."

Asked whether the gig could become a long-term role, Logan said it's hard to predict: "I'm not a prophet. It just depends." When asked the same question, Livingston said, "I hope so."

Logan anticipates being "targeted" by critics for taking on the assignment. "I don't know if I'm going to even survive this," she said.

"What we know is that Media Matters for America hates them more than Fox News," Logan said. "Sinclair is not the devil that Media Matters and the propaganda makes it out to be."

That Lara Logan deal was only part of Sinclair's expansion to become a national media brand though and now Sinclair is named as a leading candidate to get the divested RSN's from DIsney

Sinclair Broadcasting Group is the largest owner of local television news stations in the United States. It currently airs original programming on 193 channels throughout the country, enough to reach 39 percent of all American homes.

The company is also owned by a longtime Republican donor, and proudly operates as a platform for conservative propaganda. Sinclair formally promised to provide favorable coverage to Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign (in exchange for access to the GOP nominee). Since the mogul’s election, the media giant has ordered all of its affiliates to air commentary that advances White House talking points, and coerced their own anchors into personally reporting that the mainstream news media is biased against the president.

Given the warm relations between Sinclair and the Trump administration, many observers expected the FCC to rubber-stamp the broadcaster’s proposed purchase of Tribune media last year — a merger that would have enabled Sinclair to broadcast local news to 72 percent of American households. But then Sinclair tried to subvert the lenient ownership rules that the administration had set for it, and, in a rare outburst scrupulous governance, FCC chair Ajit Pai flagged the issue, and the deal ended up falling through.

But Sinclair never gave up on its dreams of expansion. Earlier this year, it launched an ad-free streaming channel called STIRR that aims to deliver local TV news and other entertainment to cord-cutters coast to coast. The broadcaster proceeded to stock up on the best damaged-goods conservatives cable news had to offer — hiring former Fox News anchors Eric Bolling and James Rosen (both of whom left Fox amid allegations of sexual harassment), along with Sebastian Gorka and former CBS News anchor Lara Logan. These heavyweights will ostensibly produce conservative agit-prop for syndication on Sinclair’s local news channels and STIRR. Meanwhile, Sinclair also bought itself a piece of YES, the New York Yankees broadcast network, and is currently the top bidder for a package of regional sports networks that the Walt Disney Company is auctioning off.

Sinclair's expansion

Sinclair Broadcast Group, the nation’s largest TV station owner, rolled out its latest news and public affairs program this week, a one-hour broadcast called “America This Week” hosted by Eric Bolling.

If Bolling’s name is familiar, it may be because he spent a decade on Fox Business Network and Fox News, hosting opinion shows such as “The Five.” He left Fox in 2017; Sinclair hired him to host the new show, naming him its senior political anchor.

Bolling isn’t the only prominent former Fox personality to make the move to Sinclair, a company based in suburban Baltimore that owns 191 TV stations across the country, including WJLA, Washington’s ABC affiliate. Last month, Sinclair signed up former White House adviser and Fox commentator Sebastian Gorka as a contributor. In January, it hired veteran Fox reporter James Rosen, adding him to its Washington bureau.
