New Schedule at CMT (again)

It was around 6 weeks ago when CMT changed their schedule with them dropping Full House after the Lori Loughlin scandal. Now they have a new line-up again.

Monday-Friday
4AM-9AM Country Music Videos (No Changes)
9AM-Noon Married with Children x 6
Noon-2PM Home Improvement x 4
2PM-4PM Reba x 4
4PM-7PM Roseanne x 6
7PM-11PM Last Man Standing x 8
11PM-1AM Home Improvement x 4
1AM-3AM Walker, Texas Ranger x 2
3AM-4AM Infomercials (No Changes)

Saturdays/Sundays
4AM-Noon Country Music Videos/Country Hot 20 Countdown (No Changes)
Noon-1AM Movies (No Changes)
1AM-3AM Walker, Texas Ranger x 2
3AM-4AM Infomercials (No Changes)

What I notice is no original content, other than the Hot 20 countdown.

Viacom & their cable nets seem to be operating on auto pilot.

Thank goodness I have about two hours of CMT music videos from 1991 on a VHS tape to enjoy. Back in those days, they had only one program 24/7 - country music videos! Wow. Who'd would have thought? Lol.

And most of the music was better than it is now

CMT's main cable competitor is GAC Great American Country. For many years, this channel offered hours of original music programming, and its own Top 20 countdown. Then it branched into reality TV. Now its overseen by it's corporate sister HGTV, and has become a country lifestyle channel:

To their credit, there is original programming, not just off network reruns. But there is no music content to speak of any more.

The last channel standing in the country world is RFD-TV:

This is where you go for Hee Haw reruns and that sort of thing. But the weekdays are filled with shows about horses and farms.

Last I knew CMT has a 24 hour music video channel called CMT Pure. It's not available on DirecTV.

CMT Pure changed its name to CMT Music two years ago. It is a 24/7 video channel. It's available on DISH and most cable systems.

How Many People are actually watching CMT when Music Video's are on though. I Bet the audience size is way less when Music videos are on though given that the current leaders in the recording industry use concert sales, youtube audience size and others . I can completely understand why CMT has to air Movies and sitcoms though in todays content environment.

How many people are tuning into the network at all?

Probably enough fans of the series it runs multiple episodes of to satisfy the advertisers. Binge watching is a big thing among the demographics that are poorly represented in this forum -- female, particularly.

These are all channels that at one time did a lot of original music programming, and over the years have done less and less of that programming because it gets less viewers than the off-net repeats. CMT still does an occasional Crossroads and their annual CMT Music Awards show. But they cost a lot to do, and the channel makes more money, in terms of sustaining programming, with off net reruns. If people want to see videos, they're all available online.

Most off the shows they are showing I can find elsewhere as well. Seems pointless for Viacom to have so many overlap networks.

Obviously, the bean counters at Viacom still calculate CMT as a positive revenue stream, certainly more of one than an empty transponder would be. What would you suggest Viacom replace it with, if 24/7 music-centered programming is not the answer?

Replace it with nothing. The same way NBC Universal did with G4/Esquire. Just pull the plug on the bloat.

The difference being that cable companies stopped carrying Esquire. Not the case for CMT. So they still have access to millions of homes. Can't just pull the plug. Have to replace it, as they did with Spike. Although hopefully with better results. Nothing will happen until after the re-merger with CBS.

It's following the same formula that G4 did. Drop all the original programming and load up the schedule with old reruns all day.

How does advertising work, are agencies taking out blanket spots on Viacom or by network?
