USC Sports to move its broadcasts to KABC 790

Hey david edwardo what do you mean by kabc options are way out of cumulus expertise? I will take my answer off the air LOL

Since David hasn't responded, I'll take a shot based on what David has said previously. The only real options for KABC's signal lie outside of english-language broadcasting---and Cumulus has no expertise in ethnic-targeted programming.

The deal could also be non-binding upon a new owner in the event the station is sold.

Absolutely, which is why it's impossible to jump to any conclusions based on this announcement. Until such time as the station is sold, they have to operate it in the best possible way, and adding this kind of exclusive content to the station provides a consistent revenue flow that they're not getting now. On the other side, USC is getting priority on a radio station that it couldn't get on any other English-speaking station in the market. You can quibble with the quality of the signal, but they've addressed that with the streaming and Sirius outlets.

FWIW, it was announced earlier this year that Cumulus' WLS has entered into a similar, five-year agreement to carry University of Illinois football and basketball beginning this fall.

Uh, ok... but I was just told not too long ago that if ain't AM/FM, it ain't nothin'. Not sure how that works.

And not all 'SC (or UCLA) games are on SiriusXM. Most are, but not all.

Actually, if 'SC and SiriusXM can strike a deal, there is money to be made here. Have SiriusXM pay USC for each subscriber they send to them. I can just hear it now, Pete Arbogast reading the liner:

"Say USC fans, are you tired of not hearing "Conquest" and the rest of the USC broadcast on your local radio just because you don't live in West LA?" Well there is a a way to get all of the USC games including pregame, postgame, coach's end-of-season concession speech and so much more in clear, but not-so-high-definition broadcast quality. Just sign up for SiriusXM and use the promo code "SCFootball". You will get a very inexpensive SiriusXM subscription and the USC athletic department will get a kickback, er referral fee just for you signing up. Our attorneys say it is probably legal and it is a great way to support the future of radio and the past glory of USC football all in one transaction. So Fight On and sign up today!"

You can tell Michael is a skilled news person: he said what I would have said, but more clearly and with fewer words! ;)

We didn't say that. What we said was, mathematically, SiriusXM listenership is a fraction of AM/FM listenership. Using it to fill the gaps in KABC's signal for these games is a pretty good idea.

It seems like now this year is a popular time for college teams to move stations, Illinois football and basketball is moving to WLS 890 in the fall, which i had even forgotten about until a reply came to my post.

I am reliably informed that Illinois is still in the Big 10. Who knew? I guess that is because with 14 teams, there is still room for them in the conference. Of course they are not the only conference with counting issues, the Big 12 only has 10 teams. Only in academia, the same people who bring us the concept that your gender is not God's choice but your own!

And religion. Ugh.

If you make the true statement that academia brought us the concept of more than two genders, you (not the academics) get accused of infusing both politics and religion into otherwise safe spaces. The point was, (and I am sure y'all know this), is that the same people who can't accurately count genders can't accurately count teams in their own conference. No where else but college can you learn that 2+2 maybe equals 4, but 10 can most certainly equal 14 and 12 can equal 10. What makes the number of conference teams the same as the gender controversy? Why, the ability to self-identify of course!

Of course we can all play that game. Today I self-identify as Royalty (note: not gender-specific) and my preferred pronoun is "Your Excellency"! Use it or I may sue for misgendering! :>)

No, the point is that fluid gender identity (which I also have a hard time buying into) and belief in supernatural entities have nothing to do with KABC or anything broadcasting-related.

As for the conference names, the Big Eight did rebrand as the Big Twelve. Likewise, the Pac-10 was a rebranding to reflect larger membership. Both conferences' big brains most likely thought at the time that there'd be no further expansion. But few foresaw the wrecking-ball effect that the BCS and the concept of "power conferences" would have on the structure of college sports. As it now stands, we have five power conferences and an entire conference, the American, made up of school wanting desperately to get out of the conference and get into one of the power 5. So further changes are indeed probable. No sense in rebranding any conference now with such uncertainty around.

You think that they might just honestly call it The Big 14 then The Big 10

At least they are not putting the football games on KUSC :)

Meant that sarcastically. But here is a question. KUSC is a non-comm. Does that mean they cannot put KABC on an HD-2?
