WEMJ Laconia, NH Gone

I had a bad feeling when the 107.3 FM repeater went to static earlier this week, but today when I tuned into longtime Laconia, NH AM staple WEMJ 1490, instead of hearing Howie Carr, I heard some horrible auto-tuned modern music. I certainly won't be listening to this station anymore, which is a shame, as it was nice to also get local news, etc.

Mentioned on Northern NH board. Binnie media changed a couple stations to Frank and the Laconia duo at 1490 and its FM translator at 107.3 are now repeating a Concord station (WJYY 105.5)

You mean you became your parents? This "horrible auto-tuned modern music" put food on my plate and gas in my car when I was up there. Binnie decided to expand into the Lakes Region with WJYY.

You do understand that you can still get local news on all Binnie stations at the top of every hour as well as on WTPL 107.7 The Pulse, right? As well as on NH1.com.

It might not be the same level of local news that it was before the P&S of WBIN-TV, but you still get the local updates.

Can someone explain the canning of Nick Carpinelli .... speaking of Binnie Media?

Rumor has it WFNQ's ratings are in the tank....

Personally Classic Hits does zero for me, I think dumping classic rock was a mistake.

Is the 98.9 translator in Windham eating into their ratings?

If WFNQ is doing news at the top of the hour it's news to me

Did not know there was a Northern NH board (not sure how to find it?). Some let down locals already voicing their displeasure, as this station has been around a long time.

107.7 has a lot of static in the Lakes Region.

Ugggh. Classic rock is so overdone in NH. 96.5 The Mill already covers Manchester. Rock 101 plays their share of CR. Now that 106.3’s tower is closer to Manchester, they should have down a 105.5/106.3 simulcast. It’s ridiculous that Manchester has no Top 40 station. Whether or not you like it or hate it is irrelevant.

Manchester does have a CHR. WJYY ID’s as “WJYY Concord/Manchester”.

Still don’t get why they needed to simulcast in Laconia though. WEMJ was the only station in the market that played local news, and they killed it in favor of a SECOND CHR (WFTN is the other one). I thought WLNH billed well in the Lakes as well?

JYY’s reception is garbage in Manchester. 106.3 would give them much better coverage in the city and give them nearly entire market coverage with Nashua, Merrimack, Derry, etc.
WLNH has historically billed very well. They have great coverage. I’ve been listening to 98.3 Frank and do not hear nearly the local advertisers I once did. I’m pretty sure this will backfire. Other simulcasts on the lakes region have ultimately failed. The simulcast of the Hawk comes to mind.

As the AM band dies, this will also mean spoken word formats are in trouble as well, except maybe Sports. In Canada, as stations were given approval to move from AM to FM, they kept their AM formats, usually talk, for a short time. Then they told the CRTC they weren't making enough money and were given approval to switch to an FM music format.

WEMJ was mostly syndicated talk but no longer. Now with an FM translator, it simply started simulcasting the Top 40 station from its co-owned FM station in Concord. Yes, some AM stations with FM translators are staying with talk formats. But many are imaging themselves around their FM translator and switching to an FM music format.

They have billed well historically. And as far as the consolidation moves at Binnie are concerned, I'm going to keep my personal opinions personal. Every radio group is different.

I understand where people are coming from in this. There were many moves behind the scenes that I had questioned. But it is a business first and foremost. Hopefully the new moves work out

That doesn't make it not crap.

It IS Crap.
Hopefully, the formatic pendulum will swing back to music with actual humans playing musical instruments.
I see a lot of parallels to radio now and the pre punk mid 70's , when it was mostly disco, and corporate rock on the radio
