Can Someone Translate These Translators?

Nurse Jeff is not the sharpest tool in the Media Hut Tuff Shed, so I need to axe for a little help. The other day we picked up 90~Seven, which is a translator for KRKY in Douglas, Wy of all places. The hodgepodge programming is also heard on KPHX 14~Eighty, due to common ownership. Well KPHX has a translator itself at 92~Nine, but we've yet to hear what it's programming. I strongly suspect it's the same mish-mash heard on 14~Eighty and 90~Seven (and the rest of the vast KRKY-FM network). Can someone 'splain the thinking behind all this wasted bandwidth in the Valley?

Here are a few clues:

Most radio conundrums (conundra?) can be explained by either greed or ego.

Vic Michael, while a nice guy is all about moving/upgrading, buying/improving and selling. It's all part of his chess game and everything he has is for sale.

Sounds right. He's moving his Willcox Class A to Catalina, providing service to a good portion of Tucson as well as gila monsters, scorpions, rattlesnakes & javelinas.

I couldn't agree more. He is the Ted Tucker of translators, albeit more reachable.

Look at towns where one of Vic's non commercial organizations has a non comm CP or full power or bought or traded for a non comm full power... you'll find a full power commercial station vic owns/bought/traded for that he will be moving. The non comms are so vic can move what was a towns likely only aural service and move the commercial signal somewhere else.

KJCC 1230 in Salt Lake City has been running KRKY for at least a week. (I'm new in SLC. I was trying to figure out what was happening on this frequency---especially since I haven't heard any spots!)

Thought it was moving to Tanque Verde? I've been living in the Tucson area for the past 15 years and never heard of that town. Apparently it is on the far east side of Tucson which has even more of those desert critters than Catalina.

If this is a country version of KCDX, I think the country stalwarts here in Baja Arizona should be concerned...

Michael's KAZK is a non-comm moving from Willcox to Catalina. KWCX is commercial, and moving from Willcox to Tanque Verde. Wassup with Willcox and these two stations moving out? Did the Old Gringo buy there?

Vic Michael is part owner of KWCX with Todd Robinson. The guy running KHIL 1250 isnt the owner, hes running it for the owner.. but the programmer on 1250 is the owner of the 92.5 licensed to Wilcox

When I was in Phoenix a week ago I tuned in 1480 at night and the signal was awful. At the top of the hour was a legal ID which mentioned Willcox which is the home of KHIL-1250 and KWCX on 104.9. I don't believe that the two are under common ownership. KHIL-1250 is presently off the air and I located their FCC application to remain silent. It's almost good for laughs so I'll copy it here:
THE NAUTEL SWR SHUTBACK POPS CAUSING THE SWR CUTBACK TO POP THEREBY KNOCKING THE TRANMITTER OFF AIR. I AM NOT AN ENIGINEER AND HAVE DONE ALL I CAN. I REPORTED THIS PROBLEM TO THE 51% OWNER, JOHN OBERREUTER ON 05/11/2019 AT 08:22AM. I ALSO SUGGESTED A LOCAL AM ENGINEER HE COULD HIRE TO LOOK AT THE PROBLEM. THE ONLY THING THAT HAS BEEN DONE SINCE REPORTING IT TO OBERREUTER IS LOWELL BEEZLEY, WHO IS NOT A FM OR AM ENGINEER HAS EMAILED ME ASKING QUESTIONS.

The AM is owned by an LCC comprised of manager Mark Lucke who signed the above application. Lucke's partner, Oberreuter, is a CPA who was arrested several years ago on embezzlement charges. For well over a year KHIL was operating 24 hours a day on the 5 kw daytime facility even though they are licensed for 190 watts at night.
You can find a video about Lucke and KHIL by going to TheAtlantic.com/video/index/577372/Willcox-Arizona. The video depicts Lucke as a lover of old cowboys but he is nearly flat broke. The station was playing the oldest country music ever recorded.

For a number of years, it sounded like KHIL was broadcasting only one channel of a song recording. I didn't realize they were silent. Thought I heard them about a month ago.

Kay aitch ah ail is back on the air. They must have found a Cheap Engineer. They play the oldest country music every recorded. If it's 50 years old it is new.

When KHIL doesnt power down, they make it up to SE Wyoming at night

It's called "classic country" and a lot of people like it over what's being produced today. Music doesn't age. People do.
