Cumulus SF Exit Plan

I don't really think EMF needs anymore stations

There are still ten or so top 50 markets that EMF is not in, and many smaller markets where they can upgrade from translators, Class A facilities or rimshot facilities.

Using that logic, i<3, the Cloud Co., and E-Com shouldn’t have any more stations, right? Because they take nearly every available commercial frequency and take away a Mom and Pop operation? Radio is just like any other business, Mario. For someone like myself who has worked in the business, it’s something to adjust to.

I agree. The stations EMF bought were available to other buyers. The price paid was based on potential listeners, not cash flow, so it's often higher than another commercial offer. Free market: Willing buyer, willing seller.

The other side is if there were tougher ownership rules, EMF would simply syndicate their format to stations rather than buy them. The end result would be the same.

Houston being one of the K-Love-free top 50 markets, as they've so far left KSBJ alone

True, but Air1's Houston signal is a rimshot, and could be moved to a better facility. EMF may also be looking for outlets for its new Classic Christian Contemporary format, which thus far is lightly distributed. Urban One's KROI has often been mentioned as a Houston target for EMF, as the two companies have done deals in the past (Detroit comes to mind.)

Note that EMF's K-Love is also missing from DFW due to Salem's similarly formatted KLTY, as well as Classic Hits KLUV which has long used a different "K-Love" branding.

From a business perspective, we need more EMF stations.

Radio revenues in nearly every market are declining slowly or stagnant. So if you remove one commercial station from the sales platform, you end up with one fewer stations for the same revenue. That means the remaining stations can actually increase revenue a bit and the industry increases its sustainability for a while.

This is the industry seeing market forces thinning the herd for it. I expect more of this as marginal stations and most AMs will either become super-niche or disappear.

Amazing how things have changed in the last 20 years. EMF is now helping commercial stations in major markets. :)

Yes. The main reason being that the K-LOVE moniker and brand is already being used in that market.

KOVE became Recuerdo in 2005 or thereabouts. For a while, it was "Mas Variedad" in in the last year or so it became Amor.

The K-love name has not been used in Houston for a decade and a half.

Thanks for the heads up.

I haven't worked for them in nearly a decade so I had old info. :)
