I haven't heard 1310 AM in at least several days, it shut off the air and the FM translators are running without their AM.
I assume this is to save money and cut corners, AM radio is really unlistened to now with the rise in streaming radio.

It's illegal to operate a translator without the associated AM operating. If there is a catastrophic equipment fail, they might get an STA, but likely not for long.

Tell that to JOHN W. BARGER, owner of SA Radio Works.

I honestly feel bad for that man if nobody's listening to the AM and he wasted electric power on the Am for a while.

The FCC should change it's rules, or John should get an HD signal from another broadcaster.

Do you even know who John Barger is?

From the TAB pages....

"John Barger
2012 Broadcaster of the Year
John Barger, Victoria RadioWorks, LLC

TAB’s Broadcaster of the Year award was created in 1986 to honor someone who has made a commitment to excellence over the past year and is an example to others in broadcasting.

This year there’s no one more deserving of this award than the man who 25 years ago conceived it – John Barger.

In 2012, the Radio Music Licensing Committee announced they had reached new, industry-wide licensing deals with BMI and ASCAP.

John Barger chaired the RMLC’s Negotiating and Litigation Committees during the three-year effort that will cut the radio industry’s royalty bill by nearly $1.2 billion over the life of the two contracts."

People can change over the course of seven years.

And AM radio can become less viable over the course of 7 years.

Also not a lot of younger listeners listen to playboy music my Grandma might listen to with a martini.

All the FM translators are off the radio in San Antonio now...

From the website...

*** NOTICE ***

KAHL-AM (1310 KHz) and its San Antonio area FM translators (100.7 MHz; 103.7 MHZ; 105.9 MHz) are currently silent, but are expected to be back on air with regular programming on or about July 1st. Your patience is appreciated, and we suggest you check daily to see if we have returned to the air on your favorite dial position for KAHL.

Hi Tex,
If you're affiliated with KAHL mind sharing why the stations are off?
I've never heard such a long downtime and can only assume the AM is having problems, that's why the FMs went off when they were posted about here and you guys noticed.

Translators work this way: if the station you translate is off the air so is the translator. A translator is simply a repeater, not an originating signal. There is no waiver option.

You really need to read up on radio listening by looking at Nielsen and the Radio Advertising Bureau that spend tons of money researching radio listening. Lots of sources are trying to say radio is dead but they try to only stipulate over the air listening, excluding online or have such a tiny sampling that data has no value. Sure, online listening is up. Much of that is to actual radio stations. Another consideration is time spent listening and length of listening session. It's quite low for online compared to over the air radio. In fact the huge number of online options means almost all of them struggle to gain enough listeners to actually be worth buying for potential advertisers. When you can do multiple tasks with your listening device, online listening times suffer. With a radio it's just a radio.

Honestly I would have thought radio would have seen a decrease given all the competition but amazingly it is holding it's own, likely helped by radio stations offering online options.

If I were you, I'd save money for the moving by turning off the AM and asking for a waver to keep it off from the FCC, who eventually will realize AM's becoming too old for most people, even the old ones.

An AM or two has already tried this. The FCC has refused to allow it. That’s not going to change anytime soon.

Than KAHL should lease an HD from, say Univision, Cox or IHeartMedia to feed their translators and sell the AM.
I doubt the format they are running is making them tons of cash from listeners, maybe a little however.

The cost of maintaining an AM is likely no more than leasing an HD channel in a Top 50 market. And far less secure.

If you lose the HD lease, you have to go off the air. If you have your own AM, you are less subject to a third party.

I understand. But doesn't 5 KW during the daytime hours run up the electric bill of the owner?

For most stations, electricity is a minor expense. If KAHL has a later generation transmitter, it is probable that the electric costs are under $1 an hour.

There's one exception to the rule that if the AM station is off the air, the translator must be silent too. For a daytimer, the translator can operate around the clock, even when the station signs off at night.

KAHL and it's translators are still off the air as of July 8, 2019.
Maybe they're planning something new/different and it's taking longer than expected?

It turns out they're having transmitter problems. I don't know when they will be fixed as of yet.

"KAHL (AM) IS SILENT DUE TO INTERMITTENT POWER FAILURE ON THE STATION'S TRANSMITTER. A NEW TRANSMITTER HAS BEEN ORDERED.

THE LICENSEE REQUESTS SPECIAL TEMPORARY AUTHORITY FOR THE STATION TO REMAIN SILENT WHILE WAITING ON THE ARRIVAL AND INSTALLATION OF THE NEW EQUIPMENT."
