FM Frequency of the Week 2018-19: 100.3

Up the dial on the traditional Class B/Cs to 100.3, where I have a powerhouse local in WCYQ, Oak Ridge, which signed on as WOKI and spent several years as News/Talker WNOX, first in an LMA with Citadel, 2nd when owner John Pirkle took the station back after Citadel’s LMA was cancelled after the bankruptcy.
It’s rare for WCYQ (now owned by Summit Media) to be off the air these days, but it happened fairly often before that. WVVR, “The Beaver”, in Hopkinsville KY was heard in its place (their signal is no slouch either.

Retro/other: Dayton, OH…most likely was WIFE, Connersville, IN with WCLT-FM, Newark OH (a great local station) making it in sometimes. As many of you know, the Class B Connersville application not only danced, but sprinted to Cincinnati as a class A. The day after that happened, I heard a weak Rush Limbaugh from WNOX (mentioned above). There has been a translator for WBZI (W262BG) Xenia for several years, and that takes everything else on 100.3 out.


Lafayette, IN in the 80s and 90s,,,,WIXY, Champaign for the most part.

Yakima WA

KBWN-LP Buena WA (Spanish Religion), but not very strong. Sometimes can hear KXAA Cle Elum (Catholic), CKKQ Victoria BC (Classic Rock) or KKRZ Portland OR (Top 40) in and out.

E-skip is plentiful up here in summer. Logs below:
KSNR Fisher MN (Country)
KMMX Lubbock TX (Top 40)
KPEK Albuquerque NM (Hot AC)
KQMR Globe AZ (Latino Mix)
KOMX Pampa TX (Country)
KNZS Arlington KS (Rock)
KRDQ Colby KS (Hot AC)

Also KSFI Salt Lake City UT (Adult Contemporary) heard during the 2015 Perseids on meteor scatter.

Wanted: The most-wanted FM on this channel is KIMN Denver, Mix 100.
 
Mason City, IA:
Right on the borderline between iHeart’s KDRB/Des Moine and KFXN/Minneapolis. Depends on location and where the antenna is pointed, as both can be received.

Central KS:
Fair signal from KNZS/Arlington (SW of Hutch.) KDVV/Topeka is also fairly common to get.
 
Here in the far northwest burbs of the Chicago area, 100.3 is WSHE. Average signal for a full powered Chicago FM....which means somewhere between fair and good.
 
Here in Bremerton, WA, mostly CKKQ out of Victoria, BC. That's going to change sometime in the future, as AM 1490 KBRO as a construction permit for a translator on 100.3 FM here in town. :-( Hope someone buys KBRO and flips it to something more local!
 
Newark, NJ area. Local WHTZ Z100 New York City, 10 miles away. A few times a year during tropo, I am able to carefully null the signal enough that I get a hint of WRNB from Philadelphia, 79 miles away.

Being from south Jersey, I thought it was interesting to have a Philadelphia and New York FM station on the same frequency.

Going up the NJ Turnpike, it was all Philly until around Exit 7 and then there was a battle between that and the New York station until around Exit 9 and then it was all New York after that.
 
Laramie, WY (SE Corner of the state) 13 blistering watts of K262AI 100.3 from a mountain top nearly 1000 feet up 5 miles away from me.

I had an interesting experience back in 2008, with 100.3. I was at the shore area with my parents and I decided to put on 100.3, while pulling out of the Lakehurst Diner. I heard Z100 and 100.3 The Beat (now WRNB Philly) back and forth, just as we were going slow in reverse. As we drove away, the stations were interfering so much, it was like listening to a graveyard frequency on an AM station!
