K-Surf 1260 growing playlist

Anyone looking for Oh Wow try KFXM. Large playlist

Just what Big A said: someone with some money and a hobby station.

Not many people choose to make no money off their investments. Rightfully so.

Amen! I have never met anyone who did not want to make money off an investment or business. And even fewer successful business people who use the false claim that "it's a tax write-off." Better ways to do that. But, I have met a ton of people who were employed by people, such as Saul, who were amazingly apt at telling the owner how to run his business. There is a new radio station in Nashville that is possibly going to be "a hobby,' because it may be impossible to be profitable. Hmmm. Wonder how long...

Solid group of '80s hits, with only Kool & the Gang's "Cherish" falling into my personal "oh wow" category -- not because it wasn't a big hit (it was) but because it pretty much disappeared from radio after its chart run, maybe because it was so unlike the group's party-anthem hits of earlier years. I wonder it this will mean the end of the '50s and most of the '60s on K-Surf within the next year or so.

You'd hope not. Seems too early, didn't they just come on the air a couple years ago? I mean it took K-Earth, what....three decades to dump the 60's? They were building a good audience with 50's and 60's music the last couple years and now it's almost like they are suddenly targeting a new group all together and dumping the 65+ that quickly.

With the broader 80's and 70's music KSUR plays, maybe they'll take a swipe at some tired FM listeners that prefer a broader list of music. We'll see how that plays out.

You should see the “Visitor Posts” section of the station’s Facebook page. It’s just lighting up with negative feedback.

The introduction of all that '80s/'70s music gives rise to bizarre sets like this:

6/18/19 1:35PM Chuck Berry No Particular Place To Go
6/18/19 1:30PM Kc_&_The_Sunshine_Band That's The Way (I Like It)
6/18/19 1:26PM Beatles A Day In The Life
6/18/19 1:21PM Michael Jackson Beat It
6/18/19 1:18PM Lovin' Spoonful Daydream

Those three in the middle, especially! Better call Saul!

Of course this would happen. The whole point of the station as it was conceived is to hear 50s through early 70s gems you can't hear anywhere else. If they are going to start playing "Time after Time" and "Hello", that is schlocky 80's music that listeners can get in a lot of other places, why suffer through the poor sound quality of the AM station?

This is a big mistake on Saul's part - either he should program the station to make money or program the station to a completely underserved (super oldies) market as his personal hobby. Trying to split the baby in two can never work - you will just piss of the geezers who what to hear their Beach Boys and the Madonna fans are never going to make K-Surf their chosen destination to get their 80s fix when so many other superior outlets exist for that music.

I agree. Saul should keep it like it was, what, a week ago?? Keep some 50's, play mostly 60's (including pre '64) and the 70's. Forget the 80's for now. The purpose of playing the 50's-early 70's was to retake the crowd that KRTH abandoned years ago. As much as I love the 80's, this is a mistake. The feedback on the FB page is not good and they should take notice. On top of that, the change to 80's was way, way too fast.

If they are going to play 80's, it should be select 80's leftover disco classics or soft AC songs.

This is interesting. I listened to the station after reading about it on this post. This makes me wonder why the sudden change? Had Saul been gently changing the format since it came on? It seems like no. I guess there really was no advertising, so he has decided to take the bait and try to get some revenue in by skewing "younger." Or, is it possible that he is taking the advice of his friends or listeners? There was a station in Nashville, back in the 80's that literally would change the music every few weeks. I had heard it was based upon the owner being in contact with people in the community at lunch or dinner and he would take their music ideas and play the songs, until he got more "feedback." There were times when the station was actually great and then all of a sudden....disaster. I believe most of the music was on reel to reel. The call letters were changed to WKOS (Chaos) and it was. It's now Jack-FM and has been in the Top 3 stations in the market for years. That owner has been long gone and was literally told to hit the road.

Why such a jolting change to K-Surf?

I have to agree with you on this, oldies76. I see Saul Levine’s addition of 80s music on AM radio in 2019 as a solution looking for a problem, not vice versa. I guess the phrase “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” isn’t in Saul’s vocabulary.

Hopefully, the station will take notice of the increasing volume of negative feedback on Facebook from listeners (myself included) and undo what they did.

You guys are completely missing the story. This station is Saul's plaything. When he played 50s & 60s music, he was playing what he wanted. He hasn't changed. He's still doing what he wants. He can flip the format back to K-Mozart if he wants. No need to look for ulterior motives. There are none.

So, if a station changes format suddenly after playing what you liked for a couple years, you'd be ticked. The listeners that enjoyed the 50s and 60s are as well. The music is great, the changes though, are too sudden.

We're not talking about any station. We're talking about this one station. The station hasn't been sold. The owner just decided to do something else.

When someone programs a radio station for themselves, sometimes it aligns with others, sometimes it doesn't.

I have been listening for the last few hours. I don't think the changes are as dramatic as I had expected. Admittedly, they are "currently" playing Boston's Longtime (with the Foreplay) which seemed to draw some comments, but still it does fit the format. Maybe Saul just realized he needed to keep progressing to not go back a few steps. They are doing real time weather and traffic. He's investing in a pretty good project, given the lack of strong advertising revenues. My fear was he was going more toward canned music.
