Presidential Hopefuls Take Aim at Sinclair RSN Deal

https://www.broadcastingcable.com/news/presidential-hopefuls-take-aim-at-sinclair-rsn-deal

This Congressional hearing will be on July 8th over Sinclair buying the divested Disney RSN's like Fox Sports West in Los Angeles.

"Given Sinclair's history of attempting to skirt FCC rules, its current dominance over local
television broadcasting, and its power in sports broadcasting, the recently announced acquisition of the Fox RSNs raise significant questions about the effects the deal is likely to have on consumers," they wrote.

They want answers to the following questions by July 8:

"Have Sinclair Broadcast Corp. and/or the Walt Disney Company filed applications seeking your Department's consent to transfer control of Disney's 21 Regional Sports Networks and Fox College Sports to Sinclair? If so, when did they file these applications?"
"Does your Department plan to issue a Public Notice that the application has been
accepted for filing? Does your Department plan to issue a Public Notice setting aschedule for the public to submit comments on the application?"
The Free State Foundation, a free market think tank, said neither the FCC nor Justice has any business judging whether Sinclair's programming is partisan or conservative.

Wow, I can only imagine that they’d be showing baseball , basketball, and hockey on these channels and talking about local sports also.

That is the FCC looking at if Sinclair lied to them about the Tribune merger as Sinclair has license up for renewal my opinion is a major fine and scolding from the FCC. DOJ should approve the RSN deal on merit and not what Presidential hopefuls think about Sinclair plus DOJ didn't want Disney to own the RSN's why they had to sell them.

The Fox RSN's should have been split up and not sold together as a group.

This is nothing more than posturing. None of the candidates will have a say, nor will Congress pass legislation precluding it. I think the FCC will approve it. If anything, the divestiture by Disney of the Fox RSNs represents less consolidation than was previously the case.

Some were broken off. I think Disney would've entertained any type of offer. As it stands some of those acquired may sunset soon after their agreements with local teams expire. An example is FSN Detroit. The owner of the Detroit Tigers and Red Wings is giving serious consideration to striking out on their own. Should this occur, there will be no reason for FSN Detroit to continue.

The only one that was broken off was YES.

AN Update

In connection with its $9.6 billion pending and previously announced acquisition of a regional sports networks business from The Walt Disney Co., Sinclair Broadcast Group announced today that its indirect wholly-owned subsidiary, Diamond Sports Group, intends to raise $3.3 billion of term B loans due 2026.

Diamond Sports Intermediate Holdings, Diamond’s direct parent, will initially guarantee the RSN term loans.

I don't when the Dish Network & Sinclair deal is up if it is a few more years I'd get a deal done with Sinclair for the RSN but if it's maybe a few months from now or a year they'll wait just my opinion.

Now Sinclair has the tough task of retaining the rights that made these RSNs valuable at prices that make sense. A lot of teams want their own channels. I think Sinclair will make this work, largely because they obtained the RSNs at an attractive price, but there are a lot of potential challenges ahead.
