WABC Sold?

The morning after the announcement of the sale of WABC to Catsimatides, who has well-known close ties to the Greek Orthodox Church, Sid was expressing nervousness over the future of his show. Maybe, Catsimatides gave Sid his “blessing” to say “mother-f-er,” but, somehow, I doubt it.

I don't recall "even" Stern using that term on radio. If I was buying that station, which I would not even consider, and I heard that ole Sid would be long gone. Did they bleep it? Last time I heard, the FCC had not approved the term for use. Catsimatides is not exactly the all-conservative guy, by the way. His favorite president is Bill Clinton and they are friends. He does tend to lean more to the conservative side, but I would have to say that all of his friends and connections in politics run the full gamit. I have to give the guy credit on surviving in NYC. Especially with grocery stores, which given the rents and issues is not easy. My guess is this radio station will be a piece of cake.

Catsimatides has attended events featuring Trump and he ran for mayor as a Republican. His family members are prominent in the Republican Party. Sid didn’t say the full word, he said, “mother-eff-er.” Still, extremely crude and lacking in wit.

And our current president, all policy matters aside since that’s not the point, is clearly not troubled by such words—not the safer variant but the real things. So why the faux pearl clutching?

Good lord, just stop listening.

Not just the president. Lindsey Graham during Congressional hearings let the F-bomb fly.

We have a whole thread on the subject. The current administration does not share your concern about language.

You can’t help yourself—Derailing a discussion, as usual, with your idiotic personal political views. No wonder this place is a ghost-town.

Lee, just because a participant in this discussion disagrees with your point of view does not mean they have to be called "idiotic".

You have your perspective, each of the rest of us have ours. Let's be respectful in the way we address those we disagree with.

I don't think this is a partisan political issue. It is one of changing mores in general.

The use of profanity often indicates a lack of a more cogent argument. Just listen to some of the uncensored statements of the Antifa demonstrators and you can see that this is not a matter of donkeys and elephants... it's a matter of dumb-ass people of any stripe who can't formulate a cogent argument and have to cuss instead.

Tell me other radio hosts, or TV hosts, on major media outlets who regularly say the term “mother-f-er” Maybe, it’s an ordinary occurrence I’m unaware of.

One of Dallas' highest rated talk shows says this and more, typically bleeped but more than once they've missed the delay and let it pass through. Still on, still has advertisers, and the world hasn't burned down.

Yes. I certainly can do without it . Imus used a few words that I thought profane, and often wondered if the station got fined for it. Grant’s monologues were insightful, but I remember him calling David Dinkins “ the attendant” more than once .

And I can assure you , Stern was AWFUL on afternoon drive on WNBC in the 80’s . No profanity , but pornographic language that I will not repeat here . When Joey Reynolds replaced him , it was a relief .

I don't see how TheBigA did that. It's not a personal political viewpoint to point out that similar language has been used by current high-profile elected officials as an illustration that things do change over time, and the world does not fall of its axis as a result. As a collective society, we've become less uptight over some words. Especially one that isn't actually a "curse word" like "effer."

Its not a big deal if sid cusses every once in a while. He was like that when he was on imus show and nobody really cared.

Cumulus Media has announced it has made a voluntary $50 million debt prepayment following the closing of its sale of Rock 95.5 KLOS Los Angeles to Meruelo Media.

Cumulus used the $43 million proceeds from the KLOS sale and additional cash on hand to add to the trimming of its debt that the company has done since exiting Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection last year. The company states it has cut nearly $250 million from its debt to bring the number owned down to approximately $1.05 billion.

An Update on Cumulus debt situation.

I listened earlier today to an interview LA station owner Saul Levine gave to Scott Fybush. Mr. Levine said he thought it was a tragedy that WABC was sold for just $12.5M, and posited that WABC was worth $50M to $100M.

$100M would be an enormous multiple of revenue for a station with less than a 2-share... even in New York.

If you really want to take this old-fashioned theory of "multiples" and what something is "worth," then you should look at the fact that said values when stations sold to iHeart and Cumulus, etc., were painfully over-multiplied. If radio stations had sold for reasonable prices over the past four decades, then would we have seen such insane debt, bankruptcies and the demise of quality radio in America? Remember, Saul got in for a song and a dance. I agree with BigA - the son and daughter will cash the stations out literally over night. AND Saul's AM stations are worth exactly what in the real world? I am glad he is still alive and going well. I love that he is the last surviving stand alone owner/non-corporate Lone Ranger in the Top 10 radio market.

I stand happily corrected, BigA. Funny how I forgot that. And I am not yet 94. These two would would make an interesting interview. What would you think the Levine stations are individually worth?
