Bell Media to acquire French-language 'V' network

Bell Media today announced it has entered into an agreement with the shareholders of Groupe V Média to acquire conventional network V along with related digital assets including the ad-supported VOD service Noovo.ca. The transaction reinforces choice for French-language viewers, strengthens the Québec television ecosystem, and highlights Bell Media's commitment to providing engaging content in Québec on traditional and innovative platforms. The transaction is subject to regulatory approvals; financial details were not disclosed.

Well, TVA is national now on all cable systems, even time shifting for the Western time zones. Maybe V will be as well.

V started off with big ambitions, as TQS, Television Quatre Saisons, or Four Seasons Television. It had a sizable news department and UHF stations in most larger cities, not just Montreal, Quebec and Ottawa-Hull. It was originally co-owned with CFCF 12 in Montreal. But I suppose the revenue for a third commercial French-language network wasn't there, or fourth network if you count Tele-Quebec.

Today it fulfills its news commitment by running a few political panel shows. Overnights and mornings, it's either infomercials or scenes of Quebec outdoors with some soft new age music playing. We actually see a beach with the waves coming in and out for a half hour, or a group of young people canoeing for a half hour. I guess that's network time-killers. Global used to do something similar, but with scenes of Toronto streets at night, with jazz music playing.

Afternoons and evenings, V has an assortment of dramas, movies, comedies and game shows. It seems like there are a decent amount of commercials from national and regional advertisers, during afternoons and evenings.

Once Bell completes its purchase of V network. I wonder if Bell going to apply for V tele to be a national status. Similar to Its competitor TVA and Radio-Canada.
