WSBB-FM Transmitter Move

The FCC is fine with moving existing three-letter calls around, so long as they stay in their existing markets and with their existing owners. CBS had no issue creating a new WBZ-FM or WJZ(AM)/WJZ-FM in the 2000s. KFH in Wichita was moved from one AM to another in Wichita, and same with WHB in Kansas City. So that's not really an issue if Cox wants to try doing it.

And whatever the letter of 73.1201 might say, the FCC isn't writing violations against any of the many stations that say "WXXX AM and FM Anytown" instead of "WXXX, WXXX-FM Anytown." And there are LOTS of those.

Just listened. They’ve gone with “95.5 WSB: Atlanta’s News and Talk”. All new top of the hour sequence and music. Very “contemporary” sounding.

No, there's no confusion. It would just be easier to ID as WSB FM & AM Atlanta than WSBB-FM Doraville, WSB Atlanta. And since 98.5 doesn't use its calls except in the TOH ID, the station could still be B98.5.

Well, that made no sense, did it? 95.5 would still be Doraville if the calls were changed to WSB-FM.

Sounds like they've kept the AM legal ID in the TOH ("disguised" as usual) by going with "95-point-5 WSB -- Atlanta's News & Talk".

The WSBB-FM Doraville ID for the FM is now separate and included in the stopset that usually airs around :56 after the hour.

I’m curious how this new move will play in town now around Toco Hills. Used to be that 95.5 would get eaten up by 94.9 and 96.1. Granted 95.5 was all the way up in Chateau Elan. Will there still be any interference now? Perhaps interference on 94.9 and 96.1?

It would have to be "WSB Atlanta WSB-FM Doraville" if Cox moved the WSB-FM calls to 95.5. But see my next post.

Back when Jacor/CC had the WGST-FM simulcast, IIRC the TOH ID was "WGST AM and FM, Atlanta/Canton". When Jacor was LMAing WCHK-FM before buying it outright they had the sotto voce "WCHK-FM Canton" before the TOH sweeper.

WGST was not airing a legal ID. It should have been WGST-Atlanta, WGST-FM Canton then they could have added whatever city they wanted after Canton.

The fact WSB-AM and WSBB-FM are licensed to different cities, you couldn't state WSB AM& FM. If 750-AM and 98.5 FM were simulcasting, they could. WSB AM&FM-Atlanta. By the way, WSBB-AM is located in New Smyrna Beach Florida which was called World's Safest Bathing Beaches when WSBB-AM went on the air in 1950. Ironically the town is now known as the shark-bite capital of the world as they have more shark bites reported than any other locale in the world.

Do we know for sure that the new signal is on? A radio friend has been driving to the outer areas of town on the south side, and he said he can notice no difference.

I was listening at midnight last night. The station imaging changed, but the carrier did not go off and then on.

I don’t know for sure, but I would wager the answer is no. Just because if it had happened, I would expect them to make a big deal about it. At least a post on social or something.

Does anyone have any ideas how 94.9, 95.5, and 96.1 will react (interference-wise) after the switch? Also, are there any other markets with 3 stations so closely spaced together all running at 100kw?

I actually see this first... I see the news/talk format on 95.5 moving to 98.5 so that WSBB would be B95.5 and that WSB-FM would be 98.5 WSB WITHOUT moving the WSB-FM call letters that have been parked at 98.5 FM since the station's founding.

WSBB has had its call letters change multiple times, the precedent being WBTS (Hello Boston! :p) while WSB-FM has been... WSB-FM since its founding at 104.5 FM in 1948.

Oh, I know. It just shows what they were getting away with.

In any case, WSB/WSBB is running their legal ID outside of the TOH sweeper now, just before the TOH as AMFMTV pointed out. It reads something perfectly legal like "95.5 FM WSBB-FM Doraville AM 750 WSB Atlanta". The TOH sweeper could be used as the AM legal ID, but they do a formal legal ID just before the TOH for both stations at one time. And that's the ONLY time they mention 750 now. Even the RDDS has changed.

You're kidding, right? Why would they flip formats to keep call letters? WSB-FM is the number one cume station in the market. WSBB-FM is (usually) the number one station overall. Why mess with it? A move like that would've foolish.

One of the greatest TOH ID's I ever heard was in the 90's on a station in Lexington Park in southern Maryland. There happened to be towns called California and Hollywood nearby.

The ID was, "WPTX, Hollywood, California and Lexington Park."

The switch could happen in two days or two weeks, Pete Spriggs told me today. Depends on the FCC...

I get what Mr. Spriggs is saying, that he wants to market the FM because it's going to be easier for new listeners to find WSB on the FM dial.

What I'm not understanding is why adding 2 seconds to mention the AM in addition to 95.5 would take away from his marketing objective.

I will say that the new TOH sounds fantastic. It was time for a refresh.

Jeff Davis has been the voice of WSB since 1993. I can't think of a station anywhere that's used the same voice for 26 years. I'm guessing Jeff is in his 70's, and he still sounds great.
