WEEI, Sports Hub overnights--changes

via @bostonradio Hearing Fox Sports Radio going to WBZ-FM 98.5 overnights while Entercom's WEEI-FM 93.7 gets CBS Sports Radio overnights --July 18--and, as another thread says, some wondering if iHeart's WKAF 97.7 R&B may flip formats

BZ-FM is thinking about their 6am lead-in and weren't satisfied with CBS I would think. In the process, though, they lose Ferrall which is not a good trade off IMO. Whatever FOX has ? they aren't as good as him. I also found it uncharacteristic that he had high praise for Boston last week. Like he was saying 'stick with me.'

I know I'm clearly in the minority, but I actually enjoy Amy Lawrence overnight on CBS Sports Radio.

Especially during those overnight hours, I appreciate a show that doesn't take itself so deadly seriously, and I kinda like how the show sometimes veers off into wacky tangents.

She likes sports as much as the next person, but she mixes in "slice of life" elements as well, making it more like a general entertainment show...the likes of which we haven't heard around here since Eddie Andelman and Paul Benzaquin.

Honestly...if deadly serious sports talk is what you want, you can already get that during any other daypart on either major sports outlet.

It would be nice if WEEI chooses to pick up Amy Lawrence...but I won't get my hopes up.

I don't think WBZ-FM and Beasley had much of a choice. If WEEI-FM is owned by Entercom, it's going to put CBS Sports on overnight, because it has a financial interest in that network. That means WBZ-FM must find a new network.

And since ESPN runs around the clock on AM 850 WEEI, also owned by Entercom, that leaves WBZ-FM with the logical choice of going with Fox Sports overnights and weekends. It really isn't about whether Ferrell or Amy Lawrence are good overnight hosts or make good lead-ins for the morning show. Sadly, the quality of the network hosts is often no factor in choosing a network for the hours a station doesn't have local hosts. The decision is made at the corporate level, not by the program director.

Through the years, when Cumulus or CBS took over a sports station, often an ESPN affiliate, it would switch it to CBS Sports, since Cumulus and obviously CBS had a financial interest in the CBS Sports Radio Network. When iHeart would take over a sports station, often a longtime ESPN outlet, it would switch it to Fox Sports, because iHeart has a financial interest in Fox Sports Radio.

Only if iHeart, Cumulus and Entercom are not one of the owners, does it become interesting to see when a sports station switches affiliations.

iHeart's WXKS 1200 has been running a bit of FSR--not sure what they'll do.FSR is produced and/or syndicated by iHeart's Premiere talk syndicator along with Fox Sports.

And FSR is to begin on 98.5 on the 18th acc to radio-online. com and @bostonradio

>>Effective July 18, 98.5 The Sports Hub will welcome FSR's "The Jason Smith Show with Mike Harmon" (12-2am ET) and "The Ben Maller Show" (2-6am ET) to its weekday programming roster.

I enjoy Amy as well. Early in the morning when I'm getting ready for work she's been a breath of not so serious sportz fresh air. She doesn't take it too seriously and has fun with it.

What was Ben Maller doing on WEEI-FM a few months ago? He was doing a local show on the station in the evenings or night. Was it in addition to his Fox Sports show?

Yes, he was doing EEI-only shows in addition to his FSR show. Because FSR is starting on the Hub this week, EEI had to drop him. CBS Sports begins on EEI Saturday, August 3rd so two more weeks of SB Nation shows.

Looking around the web trying to find the answer.Maybe they will continue to do WEEI late night.Nothing so far saying whether the network stuff is 2-6 or midnight to 6.We may have to wait till the switch in a couple weeks to find out.
Wikipedia lists Patrick Gilroy as Late Night host.
CBS S-R streamcasts on radio dot com app/site and may be on satellite radio, for those who want hosts not cleared by WEEI-FM.

"I have no idea how it works during RSox season and then after baseball is done. But WEEI Boston 93.7 is the station. Prob 1-2a nightly during baseball season"
---------------------
Was not on after Mutt starting at 12am. This show had Boston callers and more popular than Mutt? ITS.

They are clearing Ferrall 1-2am, and still keeping an HOUR (yes, an hour) of Local "WEEI Late-Night" at midnight to 1am, except (well, for this week anyway) for Friday/Saturday overnight where they list CBS radio starting at midnight.

Who knows what will happen after Baseball season!

Being outside the signal range of 93.7, I do my 'EEI' listening on 103.7, and we aren't hearing ANY CBS Sports Radio programming. We are still being fed ESPN Sports Center all night.

Well tonight we are getting dual networks of ESPN and CBS on 103.7. As for 93.7 Farrell is back and the 94.9 spanish repeater has faded badly though still audible with an antenna adjustment.
