July 2019 ratings questions

Here is a quick link to the ratings released Aug 5th for July.

Just a few questions:

#1. What happened to 106.7 in the July ratings? EMF showed up with WALK and Cumulus is in the book too.

#2. Is Rock 100.5’s drop in the 6+ really attributable to Braves Baseball? They have gone from trailing 97.1 (6+) 3.3 points in April to trailing 3. 9 July now almost three to one behind 97.1.

#3 Does a significant number of WNNX’s P1 listeners tune in to radio to get Braves baseball?

#4 Is there that much revenue from the Braves to risk starting the morning show in the hole with a lot of the P1 listeners having to “retune” their radio back from where ever they went during Braves Baseball?

#5 Has Braves baseball helped WCNN? They seam stuck in the 2.0 / 2.2 (6+) range?
 
Cumulus needs to revamp KICKS. Personally, I like it over The Bull but I'm wondering if 106.1 isn't eating into KICKS.
Iheart must be billing well with 105.3 and 105.7 because the ratings consistently are poor and have been over the last few years.

I'm not so sure the throwbacks on Q997 really worked out. For starters, I'm not hearing them much anymore and second, ratings dropped a bit.

Tanked pretty badly.

I seriously doubt if EMF had succeeded a format less rancorous and disapproving, it would have debuted with a 0.2.

As WRAS can attest, mindsets are hard to break. Billboards don't move them much.

WRQX in DC went from a 4 share in May to a 0.9 in July with EMF.

WPLJ in NYC went from a 3 share in May to a 0.4 in July with EMF.

Not as bad as .2, but a steeper drop. It's going to be a long slow climb in all of their new markets.
 
I predicted Rock 100.5's ratings would see a substantial drop following the addition of Braves baseball. When the station carried the Braves before, the ratings were always worse than usual during baseball season.

Granted, the boring, predictable playlist likely isn't helping matters.
 
What is suggested that be done with Rock 1005’s playlist? I see two
Options: Dig deeper in classic rock. With the exception of maybe KSHE in St Louis, most classic rock stations are very top 100 focused. Other option is to add new rock to the mix and go more active.
 
Cumulus has a very successful station in Chattanooga WSKZ "KZ106" at least in the 6+ ratings (when Cumulus is listed). IMHO that playlist would shew a little older than what they have now but I feel it would compliment the morning show which is apparently having some success.
 
The Rock 100.5 dilemma can be solved easily.

Start adding some 00's, 2010's, and god forbid - even a handful of currents & recurrents to the playlist. Don't go full-bore active rock, though. Basically, follow the same playbook as sister station 101 KBER in Salt Lake City.

The last time Rock 100.5 played exclusively 80's & 70's classic rock, with just a tiny bit of ultra safe 90's material, the ratings were dreadful. I would strongly advise against such a direction.
 
Yeah - KZ106 is pretty good. You will get more prog rock, little bit deeper cuts - I actually heard Ten Years After when traveling through a month ago. MarkW would be correct though, except I am more extreme. Dump classic rock altogether and straddle the line of active and alternative OR just go straight active. 97.1 The River has the classic rock covered, all be it they could fluctuate a little harder in the evening and more pop in the day.
 
Mark - Do we agree Rock 100.5 is playing the 70 and 80s with a few 90s sprinkled in today? I don’t think they have anything post 2K in the playlist which by definition, would mean the station is classic rock, correct?

HOW do they show up in the ratings? They are not EVEN on the air and haven't been for some time. If they are on, they are on such low power they don't make it to Doraville (about 10 miles away).
Are they finally moving their transmitter from the MARTA parking lot?

Are they PPMing the translator? I would assume they are; the AM is really just a placeholder to legalize the translator. And getting the one-meter 0.1 participation trophy?

I drove by the old transmitter site this weekend and it's all condos now. If that stick is still there it's well-hidden.

There is nothing on the FCC web site where they have filed for an engineering STA or CP for 1310.

The old STA mentioned searching for a new site. 1310 in reality is only a "cover" for the translator. With the demise of 1310 in Chattanooga Davis might be able to up the power of 1310 but would it really matter?

Yes - I agree with usage of the "Classic Rock" label to describe the current format, even though it is not Classic Rock in the traditionally viewed sense. There is much more than just a "few" 90's sprinkled in today. Such songs constitute about 35% of the total playlist.

You're incorrect about the station playing zero songs from after 2000, though. They're playing "Like a Stone" by Audioslave at this very moment (2002). True, the station plays little in the way of post-2000 material. It doesn't happen very often! I think that needs to change.

"The new sound of Rock 100.5...starts Friday...10AM!" Might my wish be granted?

Hey, I would love a FULL TILT Active Rock station. I'd play it a little safer, personally, but I sure as heck won't complain if that's what happens. :)
