MTV VMAs Tonight

Is anyone watching the VMAs on MTV? Probably no one here. There was a time when it was must-watch-TV. Now people simply search for the performances they want to see. Lots of competing choices on the show tonight. Taylor Swift, Lil Naz X, and the Jonas Brothers.

My choice was for the Jonas Brothers, who performed their set from their home state of New Jersey. Starting in a small club, then moving out to a stage on the beach, complete with fireworks. This is still a big budget show, folks. Imagine what can happen once MTV's parent is merged with CBS.

Darn! You mean I missed that? Shucks!

You couldn't pay me to watch one second of that station anymore. When was it last relevant? 25 years ago? More, you say? Yep!

That's how I would watch the Grammys at one time. I'd record the show and watch only the acts and awards I was interested in. But in recent years I haven't even done that.

Looks like they forced all of the Viacom stations to carry it now. Are they that desperate for ratings that they have to saturate it.

That's been the approach for many years. They do the same thing with the CMT Awards, and MSNBC did the same thing with the Democrat Debate.

Apparently its more about MTV being on the Social Media Trending lists.

NEW YORK (AP) — If Taylor Swift, Missy Elliot and a 1990s rap reunion couldn’t halt the shrinkage of MTV’s television audience for its Video Music Awards, perhaps nothing can.

The show was seen by 4.9 million viewers live on Monday across 12 different Viacom-owned networks, the Nielsen company said. That’s down from last year’s audience of 5.2 million, as the annual event has slid in television viewers each year since reaching 10.3 million in 2014.

MTV considers that more a reflection of changing media habits among young people than declining interest in its marquee show. The amount of young people watching cable television in general is rapidly shrinking, and social media measurements for the show are up, reflecting the different ways MTV’s audience consumes the programming.

For example, MTV aggressively pushes out clips of the show on social media platforms, and said those views were up 85 percent over last year and were the highest of any VMAs. In the weeks leading up the show, social media engagements — liking, sharing or commenting upon announcements about the event — more than doubled over last year. No TV program this summer triggered more social media activity, the network said.

Exactly. That's what we said about the Teen Choice awards too. I was watching Twitter last night, and the VMAs were a major trending topic all night. Those videos had commercial pre-rolls attached to them, so Viacom was making money via social media. The artists were players in those social views. This is how media works in the digital age.

We got our first cable service in 1980. The first thing I did was block MTV. Never regretted it one little bit.

And also Iheart Music awards matter more in the current recording industry though.

That's pretty good, considering that MTV debuted on August 1, 1981. You were way ahead of your time. :D

I first experienced cable tv in Lewiston, Idaho in 1978. But it was just HBO and ESPN. I thought it was cool at the time, and they didn't charge extra for those channels. Though ESPN was in its infancy at this point...

But I am getting off-topic. Today's cable channels are there and I'm not sure any of them have any meaningful audience.

It depends on what you mean by "meaningful audience." The VMAs on MTV reached more people than anything on broadcast TV last night.

There are nights when a game on ESPN gets twice as many viewers as anything on the major networks.

But the overall TV audience has been diluted by all the options. Just like the radio audience.

Plus the iHeart awards are integrated with the iHeart online radio platform. So it's a promotional device for radio and online.

When you get down to it, aren't all award shows just promotional devices for whatever form of entertainment they're giving awards for?

If the VMA's reached tens of millions of pimple-popping half-brains what have they really accomplished?
