There was a new HD3 channel on, I _thought_, KSLX recently. It didn’t have a data stream that identified song or artist. It simply identified the genre as “college.” Now it’s not there. I don’t actually listen to KSLX very much, so I’m not sure how long it was on. A week or two? Anyway, I was curious about it. Was KSLX trying an additional channel, or was that a lease-out, or ...?

KSLX HD3?

Grand Canyon University has a deal with Hubbard to broadcast a "pop-up" station on a third HD subchannel to welcome students back to campus. I'm thinking that they pipe this all over campus, and students aren't listening by their own choice. It usually lasts a week in late August. They've done this for the past five years or so now.
Interesting. Taking a cue from the ChiComs and North Koreans and blasting your messages over the REAL 'over the air'.
I was not aware. Thank you. Though we’ve had an HD Radio in a car for a number of years, I’ve never been the primary driver during that time. It’s only this year that I’ve acquired a home and a portable HD Radio, and incidentally I just (finally) got an HD radio in the 4-wheeler I drive. Guess I’m only several years behind.
So it's not a de facto "college"-format station and we're still stuck with the LPFM's for any decent music in this town? Bummer.
In this age of a thousand different ways to obtain/store/stream your favorite music you should not have to depend on any radio station to do that for you.
Except when traveling in my car (and sometimes even then) my music comes from the one or two stations that make me happy and if that isn't working I fire off my music stick and get the music without all the BS.
There never has been a better time to enjoy your favorite music - what ever it is.
Yes, correct, and I agree. I just wish I could have some moments - any moments - in present day (in 2019) that approached hearing iconic songs like The Strokes' "Last Night," Lorde's "Royals," and Weezer's "Buddy Holly" for the first time on Phoenix radio airwaves. (In Weezer's case, on 1060 AM.) I'm not claiming any MD's have any easy job, but having crap like the Blur woo-hoo song and Nevermind-era Nirvana on regular rotation - in 2019 - is inexcusably negligent. It's no wonder I prefer KMLE/KNIX since they both play a higher percentage of "new" (not old) music - if they played Oak Ridge Boys and Kenny Rogers over Maren Morris, they'd be laughed off the dial.
It's been stated many times on this forum that radio is a numbers game. A true democracy if you will. The station with the most popular music wins (accounting for genre of course) and niche stations don't do well (or are hobbies for their owners - bless them!!!).
I am admittedly an old fart and do not recognize any of the songs you mentioned. I assume you are much younger and we do not share anything approaching the same demographic. That said, because the Phoenix metro does not apparently play your favorite music, it must mean you don't belong to a very popular demographic either. I don't know for a fact but there must be a streaming service that has your music or you can just download what appeals to you and build your own library. That is what I had to do after KOOL-FM went off the rails some years ago. Fortunately, there is one station left that plays most of what I like to hear (The Goldmine, and in HD too!) but I still depend primarily on my own library if, for no better reason, than to skip the irritating commercials.
BTW, there was a time a few decades ago that KMLE was one of my pre-sets even though I was not a fanatic Country music fan. But I went the private library route with them as well because of their commercial load and the more modern Country music which I generally detest. It's possible with any and all genres (even Polka music!).
