MLS Cup to air on ABC

https://tvnewscheck.com/article/top-news/238423/mls-cup-returning-to-abc/

For the first time since 2008, Major League Soccer’s championship game will air on ABC.

The league announced Wednesday that this year’s MLS Cup will be shown on the network for the 14th time in 24 seasons. The final on Nov. 10 will start at 3 p.m. EST. It also will air on Univision in Spanish.

“With the new playoff format and a change in the date, we had a spot where we could air it (on ABC),” said Burke Magnus, ESPN’s executive vice president for programming and scheduling. “It is MLS’ marquee event and shows our optimism for the league’s strength and where it is headed.”

This is the third time in four years that the MLS Cup will air on network television. Fox broadcast it in 2016 and 2018. The MLS Cup was on ABC from 1996-2008 before moving to ESPN for eight of the last 10 seasons.

November 10th is the date when ABC will air the MLS cup.

Who wants to watch MINOR League Soccer (That's what the MLS is in comparison to the rest of FIFA)

In terms of in-stadium attendance, MLS is actually doing quite well compared to, say, France's and Portugal's leagues, which like many European leagues are top-heavy and struggle to draw beyond the big clubs. I'm sure a lot of fans turn out for the atmosphere -- they love the fan emotion, chanting and singing they see and hear on NBC's Premier League games ans want to recreate it in their hometowns -- but yes, the quality of play is below the standard of top-level leagues and even dominant clubs in mid-level leagues, but I think you could safely drop Atlanta United or LAFC into, say, the Dutch league and see them finish top five or six. They would likely challenge Rangers for second in the Scottish league.

The big problems are that outside ethnic enclaves there is no soccer culture or tradition in this country; MLB restricts itself in the level of play it can sustain through salary caps and limits on foreign-born players; the season overlaps everything from the NBA and NHL playoffs to the World Series and the first couple of months of the NFL season; and American corporate pro team owners are aghast at the prospect of relegation and will never let it happen in any domestic sport -- when relegation and promotion are emotional focal points for just about all domestic leagues' fans elsewhere and provide clubs with a solid reason to seek to improve.

People in the US? If you want to get the average US sports fan to watch soccer, you need to give them US teams. And if the teams involved are from their area, they are even more likely to sample it.
