WGST Rebrands To Fox News Radio

Dana Bare It (noon-2PM) is out. She was left of center. She was let go at Salem a year or so ago. Says she's going to run for Congress.
Have you heard their new promo about "fake news 95.5"?

Hope they get a sales crew who CAN SELL SPOTS!!!
WDUN also runs Kilmead.
They will also be carrying Savage. So far as I know he's on podcast only. No doubt they'll have to clean it up for broadcast.
As for fake news on WSB, I've heard some stories that sounded like they weren't well researched. But I wouldn't go so far as to call them fake news.

Yeah, I've noticed that RS Andrews and Mark Spain are not any of their clients.
Now, with their alignment with Fox News, does that mean they will revive their local news department? Some of those network news services require you to have a local news operation. I know CBS news is that way. Not sure about Fox News.
SRN News, USA Radio News, and Westwood (Unbranded) News do not require a local news operation.
Believe Westwood News is ca$h rather than barter. Don't know of any stations who carry it.

I've been in broadcasting 16 years, working for different stations carrying different news networks for ROH news.. and have NEVER been aware of any news network requiring a local station to have a local news operation.

It would be nice if they found themselves on the FM dial. I know that they are on WRDA- HD3 but I live near Cumberland and the signal goes in and out. Super annoying. They could just move up two dials to 105.7 FM :)

WGST was on 105.7 from the early 90s to the early 2000s. They were kicking WSB's tail at the time and then WSB got serious about news/talk. WSB dumped the Mike Malloy progtalk and started systematically picking off WGST's talent--Clark Howard, Boortz, Hannity (who was local on WGST; when he went national WSB picked up his show), and later Rush.

With the demise of 106.7 (which wasn't that well-run), IMO there is room for a second FM political talker. Get the news off the bird and have a mix of Premiere and local talent. Heck, maybe iHeart and Cox can work out a deal to put Clark Howard back on at a decent time, considering that WSB has Rush and Hannity, both Premiere properties.

Except for Glenn Beck most of the talent on 640 is meh. I know that Dave Ramsey is now something like the #2 talk show behind Rush, but he's not doing it for WGST. Pull a Clark Howard and put him on after PM drive so that he has clearance in ATL.

You say 106.7 wasn't well run, and then you suggest a 2nd FM talker that's syndicated? Maybe one or two local hosts? How is that better than 106.7? Nobody is going to waste another FM signal on talk. Listen to WABE or WRAS if you really want an option.

I agree.

The only thing I could possibly see happening in that realm - and it's a remote possibility at best - is iHeart acquiring an FM translator to rebroadcast 640 WGST. Personally, I think it'd be a waste of money. The only news/talk syndie programming that is capable of attracting decent money demo ratings can already be found on 95.5 WSB.

I would guess Cox will light up the HD channels soon on the new 95.5 facility. Why not do full time talk on one of the HDs? Plenty of satellite programming out there...probably mostly barter(??)

HD radio is gaining traction albeit slowly. I remember a similar period in the early days of FM radio. FM began to flourish when programming changes made FM listening desirable for younger listeners. This is what will have to happen in the world of HD radio. Talk programming may serve as great niche programming along with out of the main stream music such as Blues, Jazz, Classical, Bluegrass.

Does anyone in this business understand the concept of "SHOWBIZ" anymore?

Once you've heard about 4 Dave Ramsey shows, you've heard them all.

Part of the original reason why stations cleared Ramsey was that his show was available off satellite 24/7. You could join any hour you wanted to and cut away, too. It was excellent for a brokered station that I helped manage. When you didn't have a show, you took an hour of Ramsey.

Not sure if, today, they still do that. I know more modern satellite receivers download programs when they are live for playback at any time.

Sure! Everything you want is being done in the non-commercial radio world. Blues, Jazz, Classical, and Bluegrass. Give a listen sometime.

Maybe I should define this idea of "showbiz."

When I say "showbiz" I'm talking about using the bright and shiny to attract people's interest. In the olden days we called them carnival barkers, tonic salesmen, and evangelicals.

We can research some things to the nth degree and still get the wrong answer because all the variables are not accounted for. And I have news for the research guys...you can't quantify human emotion. At least not as of yet.

Number crunching is certainly useful - I'm not suggesting you ignore reality. All I'm saying is the innate, gut ability to entertain and draw crowds has nothing to do with math and counting beans (or P1s)

I kinda like to hear Dave's stories of early dealings with debt collectors. I was a debt collector for a bank back when I was in college...made it a whole six months! Dave was right...you knew I was lyin' cause my lips were movin'...

Changing personal habits and negative behavior does take repeated doses of messaging so Ramsey's show actually is designed to sound like a constant repeat. Clark's show is the same outside of his updated travel deals. I would much rather listen to Clark Howard or Dave Ramsey over ANY current talk host on WSBB.

But you also said "Blues, jazz classical, and bluegrass." Nothing bright or shiny about any of that.

But a lot of stations are doing very creative things with their HDs. Maybe not in your area.
