Sports Huddle

Glen Ordway reports on Twitter that Jim McCarthy of the Sports Huddle has passed away. Many a Sunday night with the transistor listening to Eddie, Mark & Jim's escapades, whichever station they happened to be on at the time. The original sports talk radio program in Boston.

They started on 1600 WBOS (or had it become WUNR then?), right? What was the show's chronology after that?

He was in the service around ww2 so he would have been getting up there. When the SH broke up I don't think things ended on good terms. I didn't listen much to Eddie's solo gigs but does anyone remember him having either J or M as guest now and then or ever?

They were on WBZ for a time bit got got dumped after mocking an embarrassing Bruins playoff series loss.(to the Blackhawks?) They were then on WEEI (AM 590), WHDH (AM 850) and I believe back on EEI (I may have the order wrong). After 'BZ cancelled them they forever referred to it as "Wyoming Blasting & Zoning."

Wikipedia entry on Andleman:
"Andelman's career in sports talk radio began in June 1969, on a suburban station called WUNR. His show, "Sports Huddle," then moved to Boston's WBZ later that year. Airing on Sunday 7-10 PM weekly, "Sports Huddle," also featured Jim McCarthy and Mark Witkin. Andelman remained at WBZ until mid-1971, when he and the show moved to WEEI. .. in addition to his early work at WBZ and WEEI, (he) has hosted talk radio shows on WUNR, WHDH, and WWZN. After WEEI, his Sports Huddle moved to WTKK and lasted for many years until December 26, 2010."

It was also said Andleman left WEEI in 2001, upset at confrontational shows like D&C and being paired with Dale Arnold. [He had a Fri gig at the WMEX incarnation that ended in '17

Eddie needed to be the star in his own movie. Therefore a pairing with a straight man type was prob' necessary. Dale is a pretty easy guy to get along with but into sctick?

IIRC, the Bruins and hockey in general were the targets of more than a few Andelman jibes, and Dale is as big a hockey fan as there is. How did Dale like working with Eddie?

Well, more about Eddie from Wikipedia:
"He was also said to be unhappy when the station paired him up with co-host Dale Arnold as the ‘A-Team’. Although _Arnold denied any personal problems between them_, the two reportedly didn't get along either on or off the air.WEEI replaced Andelman with former television sportscaster Bob Neumeier."

Maybe that depends on whom was being asked about it, Dale or Eddie. As it said, Dale denied any personal problems. There's co-hosts who have different likes or dislikes about certain things, then there's how each felt about working with the other.

Eddie

One gets the impression that Eddie was not easy to work with, at least during his later days at 'EEI after the SH break-up.

Dale sounds like a pretty easy guy to work with even though he doesn't do schtik. Eddie was going to complain about anyone who he didn't put in the chair. I'd say most of the guys on that station didn't get along but it doesn't matter as long as the content was listenable.

It would be strange though--they were friendly before radio-- that the "Sports Huddle" guys didn't get on well and I'm not even saying that was the case. It's just that I never heard them on any show after the SH split up (including any incarnation of Andelman). They briefly tried to keep it going without Andelman with a casino buying all the time but that was not going to work.

Yeah, there was an evident aroma of acrimony in the SH split, but I don't think I've ever heard a description of what really happened. IIRC when EEI went all sports Eddie was initially paired with Ordway ("The Big Show with the Big O and the Big A") in afternoon drive but then moved to mid-days with Dale.

Eddie was very successful in real estate and by most accounts it wasn't by being a nice guy. He was tough and smart. It seems he carried over his attitude to his radio career. I recall reading that the split up of the Sports Huddle was acrimonious. At WEEI, Ordway took Eddie out of drive time and put himself there. Eddie hated Ordway after that.

Here is an SI article from the early days. Good color.

I used to like the sports huddle!

I used to enjoy listening to the Sports Huddle every Sunday night on WHDH! Eddie, Mark and Jim were the pioneers in sports talk here in Boston! Mom was very upset that they had their show on Christmas Eve 1978 when they should have played Christmas music. And their parodies like "Yawkey Jeans" and "Fenway Frankless" always got laughs from everyone. They were that popular!

Who actually owns the rights to the Sports Huddle show/name?

I am assuming Eddie owns the name/show, since the show has maintained it's name when it moved from station to station. And no station has tried to do a show with that name without Eddie.

I assume Sports Huddle is not on the air anywhere, because Eddi doesn't want it to be.

Can anyone confirm?

If someone out of market wanted to use the name, if there was even a trademark in place ( I doubt it) , it would cost way more than it is worth to defend the trademark or copyright.

Look at how many "Breakfast With The Beatles" shows there are out there.....

In market? Who cares. The glory days of the Sports Huddle were close to 50 year ago.... 45 for sure as I remember listening to it in my freshman year of HS... 1972.

I suppose. Old timers like to hang onto things in the past. ;-)

I guess I just like the play on words "Sports Huddle"...i.e...getting together to talk sports.
