Alt 98.7 Middays

From Allaccess...

"iHEARTMEDIA Alternative KYSR (ALT 98.7)/LOS ANGELES middayer TAMO SEIN has exited. TAMOTIME was previously 10a-3p on ALT 98.7.

Meanwhile, ALT 98.7 weekender HUDSON HOTT, who has been hosting SATURDAY's 3-7p and SUNDAY’s 4-8p, slides into middays for now."

Wonder what happened...

Tamo still voice tracks at Charlotte's 106.5 The End (which is also owned by iHeart) so it wasn't because of something career-ending.

From what I can tell, this was a rather sudden decision and was likely made by KYSR and not iHeart as a whole.

Is something up at alt 98.7 we dont know about?

They have been dropping a bit in ratings lately, with KROQ now ahead in the sales demos. And KROQ has always owned the sales image for the format, and although both are big billers, there may be a bit of internal pressure because both stations, on average, are off about 35% in share since the 2016-2017 period highs.

Maybe the alt format is going back to its roots. After all, you can't be both alt and mainstream at the same time.

Hey DAVID E does kroq still bill 67,000,000 a year like it did a few years ago? And is alt 98.7 close to billing the same as kroq?

KROQ is under $30 million now. It has not been above $40 million since the end of the recession. And of course 2008 marked not only the recession but also the introduction of the PPM (reducing market persons using radio by about 40%) and the debut of the smartphone (OK, the iPhone was in 2007 but it did not achieve critical mass for several years).

The billing issue is partly overall LA market billing now being at about $650 million vs. pre-recession over $1 billion. And it is partly the decline of mass appeal consensus driven alt rock as well as fragmentation by KYSR.

KYSR has rebounded a bit from 2.2 to 2.7 in the just-released Nielsen Audio PPM for August '19, 6+ Mon-Sun 6a-12Mid. We'll see if it continues going forward.

KYSR is totally within its normal range and / or the statistical range for its rating level..

In 25-54, it has gone 3.4 > 3.0 > 2.7 > 2.9 > 2.8 > 3.3 > 3.1 > 2.8 > 3.0 > 3.1 > 3.4 over the last batch of books.

Unless they increase again in September, they are simple staying level.
