They preempted that for this?

The listings on my TiVo had no way of knowing this. I assume "Big Brother" also started late and everything else was pushed later.
Sunday nights have always been a cluster especially for markets with a team that is normally on FOX as those markets usually show the late CBS game
Yes everything was pushed back.

CBS sends out tweets letting folks know
As example this was last weeks for the folks who got Indy/LAC
https://twitter.com/CBSTweet/status/1170837845507854336

And these had Seattle/Cincy
https://twitter.com/CBSTweet/status/1170839932576780290

So CBS actually sent out 3 East/Central feeds. One that started on time (due to getting an early CBS game), the 14 minute behind feed and 22 minute behind feed

Well I don’t care about your opinion on this if people weren’t so intimidated of conflict I bet id have 20 people that would agree that Wheel rob updating this thread on Wheel pre-emptions is just as important as any other pre-emption posts.

MODERATOR REMARK

It was noted that this thread was intended to highlight unusual, curious or illogical preemptions.

We now have the start of a food fight over posts about normal breaking news and sports shows preempting regular ones.

Please return to the subject or unusual and bewildering preemptions or the thread will close.

But that is not the subject of this thread. Preemptions are normal and not uncommon.

What is interesting is when a preemption defies logic. Let's stick with that as a subject.

the all-purpose preemptions thread for normal reasons, news, weather & sports reasons

well, the other thread which was about premptions due to unusual reasons has been hijacked to the point the mods have warn us to get back to it's original purpose to point out those unusual reasons, so therefore, i am creating this thread for preemptions cause by sports events, breaking news, or severe weather or any other normal reasons shows get preempted for on local broadcast stations.

so therefore, let this thread be use to avoid getting the other thread locked and get it back to it's originial topic.

Tonight's Rivalry Thursday HS football game, which is normally shown on WVLT 8.2 (MyVLT), will be shown instead on WVLT's sister station WBXX 20.1 (CW20), displacing the regularly scheduled CW programming on that channel.

Thanks for making this topic. To the moderators, I am aware that I was one of the main reasons the other thread got derailed, and I apologize for doing so. Since the thread was so long already by the time I joined here, I wasn't fully aware that discussing just any pre-emption was frowned upon. I will avoid posting in that thread anymore and will stick to this one.

That being said, some of you could have gotten your point across without all the acid tongued comments. If I want to see what stations in the US are not airing Wheel of Fortune or other shows and post about it, then I will. I think it's actually kind of interesting to research what stations treat the show with high priority versus others that toss it aside all willy-nilly for small local specials several times a year. If anyone has a problem with it, provided I'm not breaking any rules this time, just stick to the other thread, or mute me if that's a thing on this forum.

And for the record, if I ever posted about a breaking news or severe weather pre-emption, I was never trying to downplay it; just pointing out that it happened in that area. I know storm watch break-ins are very important and I would never complain to a station for that, unlike some other people (see that Bachelor incident earlier this year).

So which way should a pre-emption of prime time programming for infomercials go?

Remember that there is a strict FCC definition of "Prime Time" which is 8 PM to 11 PM EST, with adjustments in different time zones. The 7-8 PM hour is considered "Prime Access" and was regulated many decades ago to, in theory, allow for local programming in the first hour of prime after the traditional local and national news in the 6 PM hour.

Of course, Prime Access became home for game and Hollywood gossip shows, not local programming.

The only time I have seen infomercials in true prime on a major network affiliate is when there is an affiliate overlap or where the local affiliate has not chosen to take a network show. For example, when a significant number of affiliated did not run NYPD Blue in its first season due to content concerns. But in most of those cases, some type of entertainment show was run, not an infomercial.

The last local news preemption of prime time I saw was in the aftermath of the Ridgecrest earthquake where the Palm Springs affiliates did continuous news coverage during the 8 PM hour due to the fact that the whole market felt the quake at 8:19 PM PST

The other thread is for unusual or unexplained or bizarre preemptions.

Breaking news, dangerous weather and sports are usual causes for preemptions, as are some local events like a parade for a winning HS team in smaller markets.

Anyway...

FOX has a national MLB game tonight from 7-10 Eastern (Braves/Phillies), though some markets are airing more local games such as Baltimore with the Orioles game. This pre-empts prime access syndies or newscasts. Here in NY, WNYW is pre-empting Extra (which just moved over from WNBC) and Big Bang Theory. This hardly matters for Extra since it repeats twice, once overnight and again the following weekday afternoon.

Two FOX affiliates that carry the Jeopardy!/Wheel of Fortune combo are actually breaking from Wheel's 7-8E/6-7C hour mandate and airing it early, which is very rare in the states (though Canada gets it as early as 3:30 Eastern). WSYT Syracuse has moved their 4-8 PM lineup an hour early. This pre-empts one of two airings of The People's Court at 4:00, and double-runs of Hot Bench, Judge Judy, and Wheel/J! air in the 4, 5, and 6 hours. Seems they don't really have a need for local news there. Their afternoon is basically all court shows on most days. Also, WLUK Green Bay, as they always do on FOX sports days, truncates their hour-long 5:00 Central newscast to half an hour, allowing Wheel to air at 5:30. Jeopardy! gets bumped to 11:00.

WBFF Baltimore originally planned to bump J!/Wheel to sister CW station WNUV (which does air the weekend reruns on Sunday nights), but apparently could not do so, so they will instead air on WBFF after the news at 11:35 PM and 12:05 AM.

ABC's Democratic Debate tonight will pre-empt news and syndies in the West. Most of them are moving those to the vacant primetime slots. KABC Los Angeles originally had Jeopardy!/Wheel for the 9:00 hour, but they then replaced it with a 20/20 rerun, so they will now air at 1:07 and 1:37 AM. KGO San Francisco will air them in the 9:00 hour (as will most ABC stations carrying them), and are currently airing both shows' episodes for this week a day behind due to the Raiders game on Monday pre-empting them.

WFTV Orlando is airing a local news special on the debate at 7:30, pre-empting Wheel and delaying tonight's episode to Saturday night at 11:30 PM (possibly later if College Football ends late). Listings still have it as the "Saturday rerun", which actually airs Sundays at 5:00 PM for now since College Football takes up all of Saturday. At least this year, they don't keep leaving a 7-8 PM window between two games, meaning one or both game shows would not air if the first game overran.

Fox has MLB Games on Thursdays rest of the year then NFL so nit preempting any of Fox's Prime time programming only like FOX4KC News at 6pm.

Incorrect. FOX has MLB the 12th and the 19th and then Saturday the 28th (noon CDT start)
2 weeks from today (9/26) is the 1st NFL Net/FOX simulcast with Philly and Green Bay

While WBFF Baltimore did air the Dodgers/Orioles game, they still aired the pregame coverage of the Braves/Phillies game.

The Braves/Phillies game overran its time slot by a full hour, signing off just before 11 PM Eastern. WNYW New York started their 10:00 newscast after the game, pre-empting two episodes of Big Bang Theory, in addition to the one at 7:30 pre-empted by the game itself. Bad day for BBT fans in NYC.

KDVR Denver had Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune scheduled immediately after the game at 8:00 and 8:30 Mountain, but they did not air due to the overrun; the station went right into the normally-scheduled 9:00 newscast.

The people at WVUE New Orleans likely knew the game wouldn't end on time; they padded the nighttime lineup with a straight 90 minutes of news scheduled from 9:00-10:30 Central, followed by Jeopardy! and Wheel. Though they lost an hour of their potential 90-minute newscast, they chose to just air 30 minutes worth of news, and Jeopardy! started as scheduled.

Over in Baltimore, WBFF ran delayed news until 12:15 AM, after which Jeopardy! and Wheel started 40 minutes late, pre-empting a news repeat and part of Impractical Jokers. Oddly, right before Jeopardy! started, they still aired a brief Seinfeld promo stating that it was "coming up next on FOX 45".
