Local News in E. WA is in a sad state

Forgot that was even on. J. Michael Kelly won the final race for Graham Trucking!
On to Seafair they go! KONG will air coverage and IIRC, SWX too. I still miss when it was on KIRO all day long, but time marches on. I still have to get that '88 Seafair tape (5 1/2 hours worth off KIRO-7) up to YouTube. Maybe this week.

I have mixed feelings about unlimited hydro racing. As a pure sport, it is near the bottom of the list. That said, there are fans, many in Tri-Cities, Madison WI, and Seattle. I can't blame KNDU and KONA-AM for making this their principle event of the year as it brings in revenue big-time. If I were running these outlets I would be doing the same thing.

However, if you are "all in", you should be able to pull off the broadcasts cleanly. KONA-AM actually has it down, but KNDU/SWX were not at the top of their game, IMO. I realize SWX provided most of the coverage, and KNDU's anchor team provided the fill, but overall it was not a great broadcast. I actually preferred listening to KONA as opposed to the tv coverage. KONA brings in an a real hydro announcer, (don't know his name), but he is really good and adds excitement. The TV coverage seemed sleepy compared.

I have no complaint with making this event big, but if you go big you need to do it right.

SWX did not air anything from Seafair. Boo!

KAPP/KVEW just hired Jamison Keefover, a new reporter. She's doing WX tonight filling in for Jason Valentine. Also a new reporter on KIMA, Madison Brown.
Looks like NBC isn't doing the Hometown Proud & Fun segments this year, unlike last summer.

KNDU/KNDO reporter car-jacked

It happened while the reporter was covering the Kennewick teacher strike earlier this week. Scott Jones, an online tv blogger, has an interesting take.

quoting Scott:

"While TV stations continue to send one person MMJ’s out on stories, things like this will continue to happen.

KNDU (Tri-Cities, WA) sent an MMJ out to cover a teachers strike when a man with a gun approached her and told her to get into the news car.

The Reporter complied, and the punk told her to start driving once they were both inside the car.

The station says that the man suddenly got spooked, exited the car and ran away with a small piece of camera equipment.

The reporter was not injured.

Police arrested the thug that they said did the carjacking.

A very scary situation for the MMJ and for her co-workers back at the station.

This should also have stations thinking twice about sending a one person crew out on a story.

But, it is all about saving money and doing more with less.

Thankfully, this story ended without the MMJ being physically hurt, no sure about her mental state.

I know TV stations want to make as much money as they can, but what about the safety of your employees? Does that mean anything?

You know what? It might be best if you don’t answer that."

H/T KNDU

A couple years ago two KIMA reporters were threatened with a knife. Now this at KNDU.
Whatever happened to camera operators? Here in this market, there isn't such a thing...except in the studio. Even then, aren't some of them remotely controlled nowadays? Two to three people minimum (reporter, camera person, producer??) especially at a crime scene for any station. Don't care how much your 'budget' is. Safety is more important than saving $$$. Embarrassing for IMO, the best station in the market.

Major FAIL at KIMA tonight! CBS west coast feed is unwatchable and full of pixelization you can't even see Big Brother half of the time. On double eviction night. IDIOTS...pure & simple. (BTW this is not an antenna or DIRECTV problem). KIRO would never get away with this. Just absolutely atrocious for a major affiliate. FAIL!!

Wow, KIMA looks good now. They finally fixed it...after about 2 hours. Still sad for any CBS station to act up like this on their OTA signal.

Big news at KNDU/KNDO...Tim Adams announces retirement...sort of...

He apparently will take some time off and then be available for part-time.

Long history in Spokane and Tri-Cities/Yakima. A very popular personality.

I love Tim Adams!! He's an awesome meteorologist. I hope his retirement goes well.

Wonder if they will move Monte Webb to the evening newscasts. Monte is a strong personality with experience in Seattle and Chicago. But perhaps they consider mornings more important. We shall see. (I remember him back in the early 90's as the KNDU weather guy).

KNDO OTA signal (thanks Directv) out for hours now. They sure don't give a crap in this town, don't they? First KIMA, now 23.
If this was KING 5 an engineer or MCO would be FIRED by now!

4:13pm and still down. This is NOT the first time KNDO has gone down like this. Embarrassing in any market. No one OTA can see Ellen DeGeneres right now, and if not fixed before 5PM, the local news. West Valley plays Prosser tonight on SWX...from WVHS turf. In Yakima. And those OTA can't see SWX right now. Jeez!

Spectrum cable shows it off air but I guess the same issue? Nothing on their website.

Could someone explain to me how a problem between DirecTV and KNDU would effect KNDU on Spectrum cable? What am I missing? Is it because both get the signal from OTA?

DIRECTV is in a carriage dispute with KNDO/U. The signal is gone, replaced with the same (or similar message) that is on KFFX-11.
This is different. 23 over-the-air was OFF THE AIR. 'No Signal' floating across the screen. Just unbelievable for an affiliate of the NBC television network.

And KNDU has NO SOUND on Dish, Spectrum or over the air. Complaints all over Facebook.
This is just atrocious BS. SHAME ON THEM AND THE PEOPLE WORKING FOR THEM FOR NOT GETTING THIS FIXED. Shame on SWX for airing a HSFB game with no signal on one station and no sound on the other, too!

Well KNDO finally got back on the air Saturday morning, KNDU still had no sound for a while. They have returned. Claimed a Spectrum 'fiber line' was cut in Seattle....uhhhhhhh....Xfinity serves all of Seattle. Unless something changed with Spectrum, I don't believe them. It's poor engineering (if there is any). And no one at the station caring about the issue until 24 hours after the fact. I mean, to the viewers it's a big middle finger. When SWX was in Yakima for the West Valley home game vs. Prosser on Friday, did anyone notice that local viewers couldn't see 23.3/Spectrum 183? What's the point of having cameramen...and a broadcast? How many streamed the game....which may or may have not had the same issue?

But what has also returned is for the fourth freakin' time in 2019 - HOT TUBS HOT TUBS HOT TUBS MAJOR MANUFACTURERS 2019 INVENTORY TRAC CENTER PASCO!! *JESUS CHRIST!!*
You know what, I'll just say it right now. I will never attend anything at the TRA...Hapo Center, excuse me. Even the big yard sale they do every year. They don't get a dime of my business because they just keep letting these scammers in the damn building over and over. I have never seen these hot tub folks get inside that building more times in one year than I have this one. The SunDome doesn't get away with this. The Yakima Convention Center too.

It took them 4 years to pronounce Pasco correctly. Probably will take another 4 years to get the name of venue correct. But again nobody cares if they get the “buy”. Sad.

Hapo should sue them for not using the correct name of venue. With that frequency of ads, they are losing hundreds if not thousands of dollars everyday.

To expand on this, Trac Center is mentioned an average of 14 times on any one of these spots. They are on virtually all Tri-Cities media, atleast 10 radio stations and atleast 3 tv stations. Do the math. Hapo has missed out on literally many thousands of dollars of sponsorship mentions on this one event. I hope someone, anyone with Hapo realizes this and goes after them for lost revenue. They have nothing to lose, as there is really not another good venue for this event.
