https://tvnewscheck.com/article/top-news/239468/wsvn-miami-renews-its-fox-affiliation/

Sunbeam Television-owned WSVN Miami (DMA 16) on Thursday signed a multi-year affiliation agreement with Fox Broadcasting. The station has been a Fox affiliate since 1989.

“We have enjoyed a 30-year partnership with the Fox network,” said Ed Ansin, WSVN owner and president. “Our strong news brand, viewer loyalty and Fox’s programming, which targets viewers 25-54, make us perfect partners.”

Its a multi Year contract in this renewal. Originally during the Tribune/Sinclair talks and the Tribune/Nexstar talks rumors of WSVN Losing their Fox affiliation was at play and Fox was planning to get a Miami station in that proposed deal.

This is FOX's strongest affiliate, not one of the strongest but THE strongest one they got. Without WSVN, I think FOX would *somewhat* be toasted.

Somewhat is a good point. It’s excellent for Fox to have a very strong affiliate in a major market. What Fox (and the Ansins) have realized is most of that success is from non-network programs (news, first-run syndication, etc). It’s been that way since they revamped the news after they switched from NBC in ‘89. Unless you have an O&O station in the market, it’s downright stupid for Fox to try and change the status-quo. They’d come out on the losing end not unlike the mess that is NBC Boston...yes it’s an O&O’d station, but there have been a lot of growing pains to say the least.

I have a begrudging respect for Sunbeam as they are shrewd negotiators because they can be. You don’t like preemptions or a difficult renewal? Go affiliate with someone else!
