WZLX and WBOS

Is there any difference between these two stations. Are they directly competing against each other.

BOS plays more 90s titles. A bit "Younger". BOS also has a much heavier attitude. Almost like an active rock station circa 1998. Beer, Boobs, and Fart jokes.

ZLX however isn't without it's own advantages. Heritage Talent in Mid-Days and PMD will be tough to compete with.

ZLX with the money demo adults 25-54 is still on top (not by much though), however I was surprised to see they've been beat (more like murdered) consistently by Dave & Chuck the freak. I never thought a syndicated show would do as well as it's doing in Boston.

They're definitely competing and there's a lot of crossover, but WZLX, at least for now, still plays a few of the very late '60s Beatles hits, I don't think WBOS touches the Beatles, and WZLX still plays a couple of the big solo '70s/'80s pop/rock artists like Billy Joel and Springsteen that WBOS won't touch.

[If Cheap Channel hadn't ruined WZLX, there wouldn't be any need for " The next generation of classic rock" with its emphasis on hair bands. I guess that Adam 12, besides being one of the nicest people in radio, has some influence on WBOS'S musical direction, and if he open up the playlist, and make it more daring, and exciting to listen to, then they'll hand ZLX, T their asses in a brown paper bag.

Do you guys actually listen to the station?

1) When did we either reference boobs or make a fart joke? That's certainly not in our imaging arsenal.

As for Dave and Chuck (whom I don't recall dwelling on those topics either), it's true that we're quite provincial as a city, but I'm also not surprised that the guy who grew up in Ireland (Dave) would be popular among Bostonians.

2) "Next Generation of Classic Rock", not "New."

3) No jock anywhere important has "influence over the playlist."

Can't speak for anyone else, and I'm very vocal about my disdain for FM radio these days (preferring satellite and internet stations), but I do respect classic rock and classic hits stations as what they are. Specifically for WBOS, Adam 12 is what got me to start listening when I was in my car (changing from the pre-set for the stations where I broadcast podcasts from my bluetooth FM transmitter). I was a fan of his from as far back as WBCN. I even listened to him as "Hollaran" when he did part times on WBMX after it moved to 104.1.

As for morning radio, my commute is 15 minutes and I choose podcasts for that drive. I have listened to Dave and Chuck on occasion, and I find that their show to be entertaining. I think that most people are stuck on the "they're broadcasting from Detroit" and passing judgement. After all, we all need to hear endless conversations about Antonio Brown. It's local! We are so far removed from the days of Stern or O&A broadcasting from New York, people bought into the whole "local means automatically better" idea. I find that Dave and Chuck have a unique presentation that is fast paced like pop stations, yet has more edge than what is commonly found on pop radio. Perhaps it suits more of a modern audience.

I find that they have an intellectual sensibility which they apply to fluffy topics. It's easy to imagine Lisa Way reading TOH news on NPR.

The interesting thing to me is that WZLX is just slightly behind the #1 station in the 18-34 demo. I've seen this in a number of places, including Philadelphia, where classic rock is very popular with young people. In fact I was at a concert just last night by a group of 20-something musicians, and at one point, the guitar player quoted Jimi Hendrix's unmistakable riff from VooDoo Child. Young people revere classic rock. They seem to prefer in a lot of places to current rock. But they don't have that same affection for classic hits.
