The Sound continues to move....

Well here they are. https://ratings.****************/cgi-bin/rol.exe/arb039

Seattle can support two country stations. What KBKS lost KJR-AM made up, Jaq and JR made some gains and looks like Seattle can support those two formats too. 710 gets their Seahawks bump. Go Hawks!!!

88.5 losing audience month to month, now down at nearly rock bottom with a 2.1. Yes, great bump for KIRO-AM, nearly in the 4s. And of course, the #3 station KSWD still holding strong and moving up a tenth. Entercom must be loving it. This station is a complete winner even with the '60s and '70s mixed in. They are the best commercial FM in Seattle IMO. I'd have a preset on 94.1 if I was living closer to Seattle. But I'll listen online here and there.

But remember, Steve, these are 12+ numbers...which Kelly will be reminding us of as he does over and over. Sorry, gotta run now and get to O'Reilly's in Factoria before they close

Like George & Weezy---

The Sound is still "movin on up"

The new numbers are out....

Is it just me, or are the top 12 or so unusually compressed? Usually the top stations are way out in front, followed by the rest of the top 10, but everything seems a bit more compressed this month. I don't think KUOW has a problem, as both NPR stations have been trending down over the past several months. I'm not sure how the impeachment proceedings will affect that.

Oh, now I get it. And you want it for free? Sure.

I understand how listening to KUOW would severely limit your ability to post on every board.

Next time, and there will be a next time, you want to say a station "has a problem," try listening to the radio station first.

Since the thread is about ratings, I didn't think I had to be specific. Next time I'll spell it out so even you can understand.

A four book decline is a problem. I'm probably not the only one who sees it that way.

This is Seattle we're talking about...NPR in W. Washington is doing fine. KUOW is doing fine (even more considering they are less concerned about individual ratings over donations).

I mean, heck, this is the only town I know of where an "eclectic" station that does poorly in the ratings gets millions of dollars of endowment support from a "unknown" big patron (*cough* Paul Allen *cough*) and a few million from its listeners just to put up a cool new fancy building in a trendy-ish part of town. And another where a niche format like Jazz or Classical can drum up enough support from its listeners to purchase the station and preserve its format(s). I mean, heck, San Francisco doesn't even have that record of non-comm radio benevolence!

[EDIT]: I don't think KING-FM was fully purchased by it's listeners. I coulda swore Bonneville donated the actual license...probably to avoid major PR problems by changing formats and for a tax writeoff. Classics Radio was responsible for figuring out the rest (studio rental, tower rentals, expenses, payroll, etc)

KING FM was not purchased by its listeners at all. It was donated to Seattle Arts (now Beethoven, Inc.) when the TV station was sold by the Bullitt family to Providence Journal and the AM was spun off to EZ Communications. It ran as a for profit classical station until I believe roughly 2010, when it became non-profit.

But point well taken, this area does support classical and jazz programming very well. Though to call lower Queen Anne "trendy" is a bit of a stretch.

You are the only one because KUOW has a monthly decline, not a full book.

Additionally, a news/talk station losing ground month-to-month in June, July, August and September is not indicative of a problem, it's very common news/talk summer listening.

Don't get annoyed because someone asked you to back up your assertion.

It's a substantial drop. Here's the quote from Research Director Inc:

UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON N/T KUOW was down for the fourth book in a row (5.2-4.5) and fell five places to #9.

A fourth straight drop is a problem regardless of time of year.

Each of the 13 times a year ratings reports is a "full book" in the PPM world of Seattle.

There are no Spring, Fall, Summer, Winter books covering three month periods and there have not been since the 2008-2009 roll out of the PPM. Each 28 day period is a full, weighted, stand alone book.

So a 4 month decline is a 4 book decline.

While the school vacation periods sometimes have an effect on news/talk stations, four months is much more than the vacation period in any school district. So what we have is a downward trending from book to book to book to book.

It is not down as significantly, but KNKX has gone through a similar decline over the same period. KUOW was at a 5.6 in June, dropping to a 4.5 this month. KNKX was at a 2.5 in June and has dropped to a 2.1 this month. If KUOW continues to drop even as KNKX rises again, that will be a problem, but I would not consider KUOW having a problem.

Unless you see KNKX dropping more in a distinct downward trend, it's important to remember that the lower a station's share the greater the margin of error. So a 2.5 and a 2.1 are statistically the same.
