Shari Redstone Explores Plan to Launch Fox News Competitor (Exclusive)

https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/n...lores-plan-launch-fox-news-competitor-1247475

Umm How will that work though. This is at a time when OANN, Newsmax and Sinclair have been named to make a competitor outlet for Conservatives..

The mogul, who has spoken with former Fox News star Megyn Kelly, may look to rebrand an existing Viacom linear channel to create a conservative-leaning news network.

In the midst of closing a merger between CBS and Viacom, Shari Redstone is quietly exploring a plan to launch a conservative TV outlet meant to square off with the Fox News Channel, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter.

This Redstone plan for a new TV service also would have a streaming component. THR has learned that Pluto, which Viacom acquired in March for $340 million, is about to launch an as-yet-unannounced streaming conservative news and opinion channel. A source says the idea for that network was in the works before the Pluto acquisition.

Redstone has approached current and former Fox News personalities about such a plan, sources say, and she has spoken with former NBC News host Megyn Kelly. A rep for Kelly declined to comment.

As the merger of Viacom and CBS awaits regulatory approval, a Redstone spokesperson confirms that she quietly visited President Trump in the White House recently but denies any plan to launch a conservative TV network (as does a spokesperson for Viacom). Redstone plays her personal politics close to the vest but shortly after Trump’s election she told THR, "He's always been very good to me and a tremendous supporter of me personally."

None of them have the reach of any of the Viacom cable channels. Most of them are seen in 70-90 million homes. All they'd have to do is a re-brand, utilize some CBS News content, and presto: Instant conservative TV channel. No one else can put it together that quickly.

CBS News had bypassed the idea of a 24/7 cable channel when it started CBSN several years ago. But that content would be available to this channel after the merger. Not sure that any conservatives would accept Megyn Kelly at this point however. It's funny to me that conservatives have created this conspiracy theory about mainstream media and big tech companies. Meanwhile both CBS and Facebook have been meeting with conservatives, and the RNC has launched a $1 million Facebook ad campaign.

If Viacom attempts to combine conservative commentary with ultra-liberal (per their belief) CBS News content, consider it dead in the water. CBS has been the bane of conservatives since Ed Morrow brought down Joe McCarthy.

And yet they were also the bane of Lyndon Johnson, who called Bill Paley personally to complain about their Vietnam coverage. If Shari Redstone says Trump has been a big supporter of hers, that's all that's needed.

Hannity will be off Fox contract next year if he wants to leave. Were Viacom to do this and picked him and O'Reilly up, it would shake things up significantly and cause audience losses for FNC. We'll see if she's serious. Hannity wants to leave NY. He could likely be lured for the same money with the ability to do TV from FL or TX.

Redstone talks a lot of stuff though and not much ever happens, so I'm skeptical that anything comes of this.

He was probably just fine with their coverage of the Civil Rights Act that he was so instrumental in pushing through Congress. People forget that both LBJ and his predecessor, JFK, were strong anti-Communists and quite hawkish in their foreign policies.

The point is everyone complains about negative coverage. Fox News has asked this administration some of the toughest questions they've faced, and they're the ones with the poll that angered the president. He's not happy with them. Maybe he'll be happier with whatever Redstone comes up with. Probably not.

What is needed is a conservative news network that will stand up to Trump and go against him when he's wrong. It's happening now with some Fox News people but there are still some of them that still act like he can do no wrong. If that's all that the CBS channel is going to do I won't be watching.

and the idea of this network launching is happening right as Shepard Smith had enough of the network's pro-Trump views. i can see him being snatched up by this new conservative news network that could be created by ViacomCBS

A news network for Never Trumpers? There aren't enough of them. Trump and his fans want 100% loyalty. Plus we do have the demographic issue.

Fox News did that recently and Cavuto was doing critiques on the President on his Fox News show. But it comes at a time when Fox is wondering how many non-Trump voters do they need to maintain an audience to get newer demos.

how much longer before the average FNC viewer dies or goes to the old folks home, and with it their cable TV subscriptions?

Supposedly the average viewer is in his (and yes, they're mostly male) early 60s, I'd say any impact is at least 10 to 15 years off, and that's only assuming that no new younger viewers take the infirm and deceased viewers' place in the audience.

Not likely. He's a lighting rod for criticism and not a big ratings draw. If he ends up anywhere, it might be CNN, that is, if CNN still exists once Smith is eligible to be on the air again.

Shari Redstone has no plans to launch a conservative news channel to compete with Fox News, reps for the billionaire media heiress said.

According to The Hollywood Reporter on Tuesday, Redstone, who serves as vice chairwoman of CBS and Viacom, has been quietly exploring a plan to launch a conservative news network on Viacom.

The report said Redstone has been holding talks with former and current Fox News personalities, including Megyn Kelly, as well as with President Trump.

“Viacom has no intention of launching a TV news channel, conservative or otherwise,” a Viacom rep said.

Redstone’s spokeswoman also denied that a news network was in the works, but confirmed that the mogul recently met with Trump in what has been characterized as an hour-long meeting with no agenda.

Here is an Update.

None of the "amateurish" challengers to the Murdochs' cash-cow TV channel has the resources to compete, leaving a door open for a well-funded conglomerate (say, ViacomCBS) to roll the dice.
Shari Redstone has denied plans to launch a conservative-leaning TV channel to battle Fox News, but the mogul’s Viacom dipped its toe into the space Oct. 15. That day, the company’s Pluto TV free streaming service — which Viacom bought in March for $340 million and has 18 million users — debuted a beta version of channel The First, featuring right-wing talkers Buck Sexton and Jesse Kelly.

Not exactly the name recognition of Fox News’ Sean Hannity or Tucker Carlson, but The First is set to add three more shows by January when it officially enters a crowded space that includes BlazeTV, Newsmax TV, One America News Network, Daily Wire, Breitbart News and Salem Media Group, all of which are positioning themselves as an alternative to Fox News, which — despite its aging linear audience — makes roughly $1.3 billion a year for its Fox Corp. parent.

For context, Disney’s entire broadcast business, which includes ABC (but not ESPN), makes about what Fox News does each year. The channel is also extremely influential, given that 19 percent of voters in the last presidential election called it their primary news source, ahead of CNN, Facebook, local TV stations, all broadcast networks and every major newspaper, according to Pew Research. And, per SNL Kagan, Fox News also gets $1.65 per TV subscriber compared with 96 cents for CNN and 29 cents for MSNBC.

It raises the question: Why hasn’t another TV conglomerate pulled the trigger on a competitor with wide cable distribution?

The most likely answer: The entry barrier is steep. Fox News spent an estimated $80 million a year on the operation in the early years after its 1996 launch, in addition to paying carriers $11 per subscriber to carry the channel, with 17 million subs at launch.
