Metallica on 1580?

East of Charlotte NC, I heard "Unforgiven" just before sunset while going east. I was climbing a very long hill, though another factor could have been the creek running north to south.

A few minutes later I was picking up nearby WZKY like I was supposed to.

Radio-Locator lists three Classic Hits stations on 1580, VChimp. One in VA, one in IN, and one in KY.

All three seem to be 250-watters.

Bon chance and 73

Possibly WWTF out of Lexington, KY?

AM rock station on 1580 feeding a local translator. 10kW days. It’s possible they were still running day power. From where you were, it would seem a very possible station

Could be.

WZKY is also classic hits but I would hope Metallica isn't in their playlist. Also this week I hear "Chantilly Lace" so they're close to being oldies.

If the station is playing rock-based hits from the 90s, this song would qualify. It's considered a power ballad, similar to Boston's More Than a Feeling. Someone might have a sense of humor since James Hettfield recently entered rehab. As a result the band has been back in the news.

The old WAXU 1580 Georgetown, KY left on 10 kW sounds correct. Georgetown is a suburb of Knoxville. The pattern maximum on 10 kW is close to 2000 mV/m @ 1 km, or close to 50 kW minimum Class B nondirectional field.

WZKY has never ventured into the 90s and is not rock-based.

Last night I wasn't even hardly out of the city and heard something like Herb Alpert coming from somewhere else. WZKY may have been doing news but I don't remember.

That's pretty remarkable. Usually if I get anything from the north it's WJFK.

Maybe that's the station that was playing some really old songs last winter. I lost it before I got station ID. But these were REALLY old songs. Not what an oldies station would play.

I picked up a station for a really long time that was a little on the loud side, but that's normal sometimes for WZKY. I finally heard "WTF Rocks".
