Trick or Treat - Oct 6+

Yes indeedy, time once again for numbers that have absolutely no bearing on reality (kinda like Los Buckeye Boyz). 6+ for October:https://ratings.****************/cgi-bin/rol.exe/arb057

1 KEZ
2 KYOT
3 KSLX
4 KOOL (don't you even think of playing Xmas music this year!)
5 KALV/KNIX tied
6 KUPD
7 KTAR
8 KJZZ
9 KMXP
10 KZZP

Ghosts & Goblins

KMVP up nicely, while all the other Sports Parking Lots languish
KMLE continues to suck
KMVA nice work for the Dewey-Humboldt/Gilbert simulcast
KNAI once dominant, now an also ran....maybe its time to "calmly" take over 102.1?
KOAI wow..nothin' so far

KOAI has had nearly a full month now with the new format and so far it appears to be a dud. Not sure what the numbers are for the “core demographic,” but the presentation is stale and all over the place. They need a reimagined presentation and some DJ’s to make this format viable.

Meanwhile, our infamous Lumberyard, 1440 KAZG AM, with their signal deficit translator on 92.7 FM, appears to be holding their own with a 1.7, better than KOAI and their 1.3 rating. I think KOAI might come to learn that listeners, even in their target demo of 55-72, prefer the traditional oldies presentation of KAZG and a quality professional DJ like Steve Goddard to the mish mash mess on 95.1 FM!

The "October" book ended the 9th of October, so what you see is just a few days over one week of the new format.

That said, I looked at 35-64, the stated target of KOAI. The first week (not month... week) of October's book (ending 9/18) had a 1.9, and the last one (Ending 10/09) had a 1.0. But "weeks" can be much more erratic than "books" which is why Nielsen does not allow clients to sell using weeklies.

That last week of the book was the only full week for KOAI in the new format... I believe the flip happened on the 30th of September, which was mid-way into week 3 of the October book.

Yes, two-thirds of the October book was in September.

So, the results are inconclusive. The first week of a new format, particularly one aimed at older listeners, is not going to be reflective of anything... the audience in that age group will be transitional for several months at least.

And programmer Sebastian told the trades that this format would, at some point, have local talent in at least some day parts. That may be attractive to the older target audience that still has a soft spot for personality radio, but it would seem the songs being played are the bigger issue. Nobody's ever tried this sort of mishmash of pop, soul and rock from the first three decades of Top 40/CHR radio with country hits of the '90s and '00s. Maybe Sebastian is doing some research while all this is going on and the playlist will be tighter and better focused when KOAI gets its air staff. (The re-recordings issue, I feel, is only important to record collectors and other old-music obsessives. If replacing the pseudo-hits that are now in the library with the things will cost too much money, or maybe ANY money, then it might never be done. No bottom line benefit.

That's what I expected, but the fall by Oasis didn't result in an equal and opposite rise at oldies. I knew going into this that there were some unhappy Oasis fans.
