KLTY reaches #1 for the first time

I noticed that Christian Contemporary KLTY is the new #1 station in October ratings: https://ratings.****************/content/arb024

If I'm not mistaken, it's the first time a religious station has been #1 in the DFW market.

The actual rating they got looks to be a record for them too. I'm not surprised since this station has been so strong for so long. I'm just not sure what pushed them over the top last month.

Interesting. WFSH in Atlanta was #1 in that market for 4 or 5 books this spring with an 8 share, but immediately collapsed to a 4 share with the August book. See this thread: https://www.radiodiscussions.com/showthread.php?720462-What-happened-to-Fish

One has to wonder if the Christian AC format is more volatile than others. I don't recall seeing that in the past, but KLTY was doing poorly enough in summer 2017 that Edward Atsinger complained during an earnings call it was dragging down Salem as a whole. Salem had replaced the local management a few months prior to that call.

Has something changed in the way the ratings are collected? The Fan beating KTCK quite handily and now this?

There has been no change in Nielsen methodology since 2008.

Remember that the top stations are generally separated by amounts that are within the margin of error of the survey itself. Remember that shares are not absolute, they are estimates based on a statistical sample. A 3.7 can be a 4.3 or a 3.3 without there really being a change in listening.

Ratings are principally used to establish pricing ranges for advertisers and those advertisers usually look at averages of 3, 4, 6 or more books to make ad buys.

Of course, in 25-54 which is most of what matters for sales, KHKS is far in the lead, with KLTY, KDMX, KLNO, KKDA, KJKK, KLUV and KBFB bunched together within the margin of error. And that means that those stations flip positions every book with no real meaning to the changes.

Update.

I don't usually look at either 12++ or 6+, but ran Dallas against 6+ and 12+ just now.

In 12+, KHKS is considerably ahead. In 6+ KLTY wins. All of KLTY's "dominance" is added by listeners between 6 an 11 years old.

In 18-49, KLTY is down at 6th, 40% below KHKS.

Of course, in 55+, KLTY is 3rd, so a great deal of their audience is kids and seniors.

Do mind if I repost your comments on another board. There is a sports talk blog that this subject has become rather heated. I thought it might educate them on how ratings are collected.
Do the ratings count both AM and FM signals if a station broadcast on two frequencies?

Sure, feel free to repost.

Simulcasts, whether AM/FM, FM/FM, or AM and Translator or HD and Translator, have two choices if they are Nielsen subscribers.

1. If the simulcast is never broken, they can request Total Line Reporting where the two (or more) are combined in one listing. Most stations do this so they show up higher in rankings.

2. Each can be listed separately, but for sales purposes this is not smart.

I'd be interested in total numbers of listeners. Is it a bigger share of a smaller pie?
WBAP's strength is surprising, but how much of it is over 54?
KRLD's weakness is also surprising, when you consider its all news siblings like KCBS, WCBS, KNX, WBBM AND WBZ have done so well.
