Salem gets out of the Biz

Salem is not getting out of the radio business, they are just getting rid of the relative dogs in the company... bad signals, daytimers, etc.

The two they are keeping in Orlando, 990 and 950, are relatively good facilities and both have fairly good translators.

Sorry, what I meant by the "Biz" was for a time Salem was calling 1520 WBZW, "1520 the Biz". The current format is still the same.

Salem is putting their Townhall.com news and commentary site behind a $45 paywall.

A financially healthy company would likely not be doing a thing like that.

They have 3 price points, starting at $35 a year for ad-free content. The front page news stories are free, but with ads.

That's not out of line with TheBlaze or other member sites.

The best way to support journalism is by paying for it directly. That way it's not susceptible to ad boycotts.

Salem is not a financially healthy company. It's not saddled with extreme debt, but it is making losses due to falling revenue. The losses have not been large, but I don't think Salem has lot of room to maneuver through sustained losses.

The falling revenue is mainly due to the AM talkers. If their focused on their contemporary Christian format The Fish, they'd be in better shape. They have diversified the company in publishing and streaming. Some conservatives have been able to make a good living with just YouTube and membership fees. TownHall has potential to compete with Breitbart and other sites.

This should be interesting. Only time I tuned into wbzw was old time radio on Saturday or Sunday night. And 100.7, what a crowded signal. You have that translator coming on, then the LP FM from east Orlando, Mix 100.7 from Tampa and promise 100.7 from Jax. So if conditions are right you have 4 signals on 100.7. Speaking of 1520, day signal is OK here in altamonte but at night even my 2E has trouble with it. I have heard 1520 in Sanford as well but did not really listen too long to see the reception. A little OT here so forgive me but how far can 1520 carry on a good car radio? I'm blind and do not drive but drivability of stations is something that has always interested me. I'm guessing north of Sanford and that's prob about it.

The buyer of WBZW must move out of the current site, as Salem is going to sell the land. That is why the sale price was so cheap. A move to the WRSO or WURB sites will probably make the most sense to maintain somewhat of a metro signal, but will require a significant reduction in power. I am guessing the buyer will do Haitian Brokered programming similar to what they do in WPBR West Palm Beach. A move into Pine Hills will give the station a decent signal in West Orlando and near the Holden/Pine Castle area, two areas where the bulk of the Haitian Population resides.

If they could somehow get the translator lowered in power so they can turn the lobe to the south a little, they may be able to cover Pine Hills with a decent signal, and would match well with the AM in Haitian.
