Why bother with something you make peanuts off of? WMGK-HD2 is doing great, I love their playlist. WISX-HD2 is great to have WJJZ on air again. Other than those two WIP-HD2 KYW, I use HD to hear 107.9 WPPZ in stereo.

My HD Presets in order,
wmgk 2 great play list with oh wows like gloria-them and summer samba-walter wanderley, updated monthly in house by tony harris, always on.
wprb 3 simulcast of wold, live and local, more stations should do this, always on.
wogl 2 national feed radio.com updated frequently nice blend, mostly on.
wrff 2 rock nation great active rock mix local liner alt 104.5 but its active rock, always on.
wip 3 wysp tribute if you like hair bands, early grunge and general 90s alternative, updated every three months by spike, always on.
wtdy 2 more diverse alternative compared to radio 104.5 branded alt 96.5 does anyone have a copyright on the alt name, on 50% of the time.

I kinda like that 95.7-HD2 has never updated the playlist. It still plays songs that were hits in the summer of 2007 that nobody else plays anymore. I want it to stick around so that I can tell my grandkids that it’s been playing the exact same music since 2007

Good Riddance to AM-HD

It appears that most of the AM stations with a big nighttime signal have finally turned off the HD. WPHT was one of the last to do it. They're still in HD during the day, but not at night. KYW hasn't been in HD at all (day or night) for some time. I can actually get 1050 from New York if I'm northeast of the city. WABC, WFAN, WCBS appear to all have HD turned off. WOR may or may not (I'm not sure).

I don't think anyone else in the market is running HD on AM at all.

Didn't anyone consider whether a technology that required an 8.25 second delay in the analog signal in order to sync properly might have been a step BACKWARDS?

Didn't anyone consider that a technology that wipes out stations 200 or 300 kHz on either side of the HD signal was a bad idea?

The simple and quick answer to your questions is YES. The FCC even approved it.

I know for a fact that the FCC received lots of interference reports caused by HD over the years. So yes, someone considered the effects.

I checked Saturday night and WPHT was still transmitting HD at night. WCBS and WINS are still transmitting HD full-time as well, although WCBS turns it off during live sporting events due to the delay. WABC, WFAN, and WOR have not transmitted HD in years.

At night my car radio also detects HD signals via skywave from 810 WGY and 1080 WTIC, although they almost never come in strongly enough to actually decode the digital audio. In Chicago, 670 WSCR and 780 WBBM turned off their HD a few months ago when WBBM started diplexing from WSCR's tower at reduced power (35 kW day, 42 kW night).

HD Radio went the way of Betamax and 8 track cartridges. Made obsolete by the Internet, smart phones and Android Auto.

Rented a car, went to Philly for a day trip, and got to hear Ben FM's HD2 dance channel while there. I also hooked on that HD channel when we went to the amusement water park in NJ and I gotta love their selection of dance hits from the 70's but only up to 2000's, I believe. Now I have heard of the HD2 station on Ben playing dance music before, but from what I heard from this board, they haven't updated their playlist for YEARS.

It would be a lot better if they put in some rare dance hits, even some of the disco stuff that are barely found on any other terreristial FM station. These songs can only be found on one of SiriusXM's dance classics channel. That would totally increase some revenue rather than just keep playing the same darn songs over and over again from a playlist that was made more than ten years ago...

Clearly the answer is no.

I'm with you though, glad to see it go.

I was recently in Philly and WPHT is one of the worst-sounding analog signals I've come across recently,
which makes me not so sure they've switched it off.

WPHT is definitely still running HD as of this post.

Where has it been verified they’re not making money with it? And what exactly would be a more viable business option?

That is a good point. While the station is not a huge biller, it is around 12th in the market. It's nowhere as horrendously expensive to run as KYW, and as long as it contributes to the bottom line, there is nothing better to do with it.

And they have cut expenses by whittling back to 6 local hours now vs. 9 (and before that 12). Nip and tuck here and there to keep on keeping on.
