Christmas Music

With Thanksgiving falling later than usual this year, do you think that WMJX will wait until the 22nd of November to flip, or will they shake it up? How about the out of town stations from Rhode Island, New Hampshire, Worcester, Plymouth and Gloucester?

I predict the race between 'MJX and 'SRS will be on around the 15th of November since there is a shorter time-frame between the holidays. WHOM around the 15th as well.

Just my $0.01

For the life of me, I'll never understand why stations just don't pick a date and time for the flip and stay with it. I used to think the guessing games that seem to pop up in all the forums were silly until I realized that, yes Virginia, corporate radio truly can't decide from year to year when it's too early or too late to ditch the secular and load up on the songs full of adoration for snowmen, mistletoe, fires in the fireplace, reindeer, fat guys in red and white suits, Italian donkeys, and all the other reasons for the season.

So enlighten me, O Holy Radio Insiders. Do programming and accounting types really brainstorm long into the night over the exact date and time the Blessed Ad Revenue Event will begin every single year?

The decision is often based on the floating date for the beginning of the December PPM market book.

The "December" book actually covers, mostly, November. Each year, the calendar dates are a bit different.

The decision for most stations has to do with when December's book starts. Knowing that, the decision is whether to start on the first day of the book or a particular week of the book or to start on a weekend.

Obviously, stations are concerned with starting early enough to retain their "Christmas Station" image and not, potentially, losing that image to a newcomer.

It was much more fun when WROR and WODS were battling it out!

No, it wasn't. Those were really the only two music stations to which I would listen, and for over a month I was out-of-luck. I liked Loren and Wally for morning yucks, and 103.3 for its music. But at least I still had talk on 96.9 and, of course, WBZ Newsradio 1030. Thank the highest heavens the latter is still with us!

Only the first station does well. The second station bombs. So though they have a date they would never give it out as someone could beat them to it and take the prize. Instead they wait poised to switch instantly early if someone tries to beat them too it.

I would suspect that when WMJX goes all Christmas that my favorite show on the station, Back to the 80's Saturday Night, will not be aired, which is unfortunate. The Christmas Music is nice, but I do like my 80's music.

WSRS is owned by iHeart, so I assume it will make the switch tomorrow. WLTW NYC, also an iHeart AC station, has announced it will switch tomorrow Nov. 15. WSRS usually flips earlier than WMJX.

But as we've all said, with the December book starting in a few days and with Thanksgiving so late this year, maybe both WSRS & WMJX will flip tomorrow. Same thing for WRCH Hartford. It usually flips later but who knows? Maybe WRCH, WMAS Springfield and WWLI Providence will all do it tomorrow.

WMJX has flipped the Friday before Thanksgiving for the last six years. If that tradition continues, they will flip on the 22nd instead. WSRS will likely flip tomorrow and WWLI sometime next week. I don’t know about the other stations mentioned since I don’t receive them, but I’m assuming it’ll be in the next week or so.

I read a few minutes ago that when the main channel of WMJX switches to Christmas music, their HD2 channel will broadcast their regular music format and 80's show on Saturday night.

Wror is planning a christmas music run again!

Guess what? WROR 105.7 is planning to run Christmas music again! They're posting on their web site saying "Santa Claus is coming to town." And they tell you to listen in to find out when. Looks like another Christmas music war in 2019 here in Boston. I'll probably go to http://www.soundsofchristmas.com for the widest selection of Christmas music on the internet.
